Brett Borden, of Panthers.com, reports Carolina Panthers S Mike Minter is excited about S Colin Branch (knee) returning to the field this season after he suffered a season-ending knee injury last year. "It's a blessing to see him out there," said Minter. "I love playing with smart safeties because I don't have to worry about them. We've got total confidence in Colin coming in and doing what he needs to do." Branch is expected to receive extensive playing time in Week 3 with S Shaun Williams (foot) doubtful with a foot injury. "He's in a pressure situation right now and it's an opportunity for him to step up and show everybody he's back," Minter said of Branch.

Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch (knee) said after the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, that he thinks his injured knee will be OK. "From the way it feels I don't think it's too bad. It should be fine," said Branch. He said he was injured on a play involving New York Giants WR David Tyree. "It was kind of a jumble in there and Tyree kind of spun out and I planted to go and cut him off. As soon as I planted somebody came and flew into my knee. Hopefully the ACL is fine," said Branch.

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch and rookie S Thomas Davis will battle it out at training camp to see who the starting strong safety becomes. Davis opened camp working with the second team at strong safety behind Branch at practice Saturday, July 30. It's expected Davis will ultimately beat out Branch as the starter at some point during camp simply because of the amount of money the team has invested in him. The move means the Panthers appear to have settled on keeping Davis at safety, at least in their base defense. Davis has the skills to play linebacker as well.
