Branch was struggling as of late and Williams did not perform well in his last stint as the starter. The Panthers will likely continue to juggle Branch and Williams at strong safety until one of them steps up.

Brett Borden, of Panthers.com, reports Carolina Panthers S Mike Minter is excited about S Colin Branch (knee) returning to the field this season after he suffered a season-ending knee injury last year. "It's a blessing to see him out there," said Minter. "I love playing with smart safeties because I don't have to worry about them. We've got total confidence in Colin coming in and doing what he needs to do." Branch is expected to receive extensive playing time in Week 3 with S Shaun Williams (foot) doubtful with a foot injury. "He's in a pressure situation right now and it's an opportunity for him to step up and show everybody he's back," Minter said of Branch.

Regarding Branch, defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac said, "He's still testing it and getting his legs back underneath him. The test will really come in training camp ... But so far he looks fine."

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers SS Colin Branch (knee) has been struggling through summer school practice while he recovers from a season-ending knee injury. It is unknown if Branch will be able to regain his starting job, but he isn't real worried about the competition he will face during training camp. The team signed SS Shaun Williams and drafted FS Nate Salley over the offseason.

However, Fox said the team will take it slow with Branch. "He really attacked his rehab to get him to this point," Fox said. "We are being cautious." Branch is returning from a season-ending knee injury in 2005.

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch (knee) will miss the entire 2005 season because of a knee injury he suffered during Carolina's preseason loss to the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 20. Branch tore both the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch (knee) said after the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, that he thinks his injured knee will be OK. "From the way it feels I don't think it's too bad. It should be fine," said Branch. He said he was injured on a play involving New York Giants WR David Tyree. "It was kind of a jumble in there and Tyree kind of spun out and I planted to go and cut him off. As soon as I planted somebody came and flew into my knee. Hopefully the ACL is fine," said Branch.

It does mean that Branch is now trying to hold off S Idrees Bashir instead of rookie S/LB Thomas Davis for a starting spot.

Panthers | Two to Battle at Strong Safety

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch and rookie S Thomas Davis will battle it out at training camp to see who the starting strong safety becomes. Davis opened camp working with the second team at strong safety behind Branch at practice Saturday, July 30. It's expected Davis will ultimately beat out Branch as the starter at some point during camp simply because of the amount of money the team has invested in him. The move means the Panthers appear to have settled on keeping Davis at safety, at least in their base defense. Davis has the skills to play linebacker as well.

Head coach John Fox praised Branch for his efforts this year as he's played with a cast on his hand to protect a broken thumb. "Colin has been remarkable," said Fox. "He's doing it with a cast on his hand and has been for about the last five weeks. He's a young player who continues to improve even with a cast on his hand."

"I think my impact will probably be felt on special teams," said Branch. "I'm going to work hard regardless in trying to get into that starting lineup, and hopefully that will push other people, but the more I can contribute on special teams, the better."
