Sports Xchange reports Denver Broncos FB Cecil Sapp had spent most of the team's current minicamp working with the first-team offense, ahead of last year's starting FB Kyle Johnson. Head coach Mike Shanahan said Sapp would be given the opportunity to win the job outright in training camp. "Cecil is a guy that I feel is talented enough to be the starting fullback or starting tailback, he's that kind of athlete," Shanahan said. "Obviously he's done a good job at the fullback position. There's great competition there at that position and we'll let these guys compete and find out who wins the position."

Bill Wilson, of the Reporter-Herald, reports Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan once again discussed his running back situation Friday, June 2. Shanahan hinted there is a chance FB Cecil Sapp would get an opportunity to earn more carries next season. "Heck, I feel Cecil Sapp could do a great job playing at the tailback position," Shanahan said. "We've got some guys there competing for the job, and even though we have some people listed as one, two, three and four, you really don't know who they're going to be until you get through the preseason." In order to earn significant time at tailback, Sapp would have to overcome frontrunners RB Ron Dayne, who is gaining steam after a comeback performance in 2005, and RB Tatum Bell, whose durability is still in question.

One of the reasons why we did (release) Mike (Anderson) is we felt very good about our running back situation. Take a guy like Ron Dayne; we've got a lot of confidence in him. We know what Tatum Bell has done. Cedric Cobbs has brought a lot to the table. We liked what we saw with the practice squad for a year. Take a look at Cecil Sapp. Cecil was very successful at the tailback in college. Cecil could come in and play extremely well. We have a number of candidates, I believe, that can get the job done for us."
