NFL | Tony Romo has not filed retirement papers

Wed, 12 Apr 2017 15:08:49 -0700

Retired QB Tony Romo has not filed his retirement papers with the NFL at this point and does not plan to file the papers in the near future.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is leaving open the chance of playing in 2017 if the right situation comes up, so owners will need to monitor the situation. Romo has the chance to be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback with the right team if he does decide to continue his career.

NFL | Tony Romo officially takes job with CBS

Tue, 04 Apr 2017 19:20:54 -0700

Retired NFL QB Tony Romo officially accepted a job with CBS Sports Tuesday, April 4, to be their lead television analyst for the upcoming year. He'll work alongside Jim Nantz on the station's No. 1 broadcast team.

Fantasy Tip: This should immediately put to rest any thoughts that maybe Romo would change his mind about retiring and latch on elsewhere. Fantasy owners can officially take the 11-year veteran off their list of potential draft day targets.

Cowboys | Tony Romo officially released

Tue, 04 Apr 2017 12:16:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo was officially released Tuesday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: The Dallas Cowboys are officially Dak Prescott's team to quarterback, as if that was a question anyway. The Denver Broncos and Houston Texans, the two teams most heavily linked to Romo, will stick with their quarterbacks, at least for the time being. No Denver or Houston quarterback, however, is in QB1 territory.

Cowboys | Tony Romo will be released

Tue, 04 Apr 2017 10:55:03 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Dallas Cowboys will release retired QB Tony Romo as a post-June 1 cut, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: This is a formality for Dallas, but it does at least leave the door cracked open for Romo to freely sign with a team of his choosing. It would be a dramatic twist to this saga, and an unlikely one at that.

Cowboys | Tony Romo retiring

Tue, 04 Apr 2017 05:26:01 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo decided to retire Tuesday, April 4, to pursue a career in broadcasting, according to sources. Dallas is expected to designate Romo a post-June 1 release, softening the blow against the Cowboys' cap this season. Instead of counting $24.7 million in 2017, Romo would count $10.7 million this year and $8.9 million in 2018. The Cowboys would gain $14 million in cap space, but it would not become available until June 2.

Fantasy Tip: Romo could still wind up returning in an emergency situation if a starting quarterback goes down in camp. While you should remove him from your draft boards, he could re-emerge as a QB2 later.

Broncos | Tony Romo not trade option for Denver

Mon, 03 Apr 2017 16:37:16 -0700

The Denver Broncos will not trade for Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo even though the Cowboys have allowed Romo to talk with other teams, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Broncos have said they are happy with Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch on their roster and may not pursue Romo even if he is a free agent. Siemian and Lynch are expected to compete for the starting job during training camp, but the winner of the job probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Texans | Houston will not trade for Tony Romo

Mon, 03 Apr 2017 16:30:38 -0700

The Houston Texans will not trade for Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo even though the Cowboys have allowed Romo to talk with other teams, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Texans likely do not want to take on Romo's contract and will wait for him to be released before they pursue him. He probably would be the team's starting quarterback in 2017 if he joins the Texans and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback.

Cowboys | Tony Romo can talk to teams

Mon, 03 Apr 2017 12:52:07 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has been given permission by owner Jerry Jones to speak with other teams, according to a source. Romo or his agent can schedule a workout, visit or physical with any prospective team. Furthermore, interested teams are only limited to conversations regarding Romo's 2017-19 contract.

Fantasy Tip: The wheels are finally starting to turn for Romo to possibly play for someone other than the Cowboys. The Houston Texans and Denver Broncos are the two most favored teams to court Romo, but nothing is set in stone. Even if he does sign with someone, his health is a major question mark. Tread carefully in fantasy drafts as he has only played in five games the last two years.

Cowboys | Mid-April ending point in Tony Romo saga?

Fri, 31 Mar 2017 12:01:37 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo should have a good idea regarding his status with the Cowboys by April 17 - the start of the team's offseason workout program - according to former sports agent and CBS Sports' Joel Corry.

Fantasy Tip: Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones stated earlier in the week he anticipates a resolution with Romo before the start of training camp in late July, which is most likely posturing on his end. It seems much more likely he'll be released closer to Corry's projected date than Jones', if only so all parties involved can avoid the awkwardness of the situation. The Houston Texans remain Romo's most likely suitor, assuming he doesn't end up taking a network job.

Cowboys | Training camp signifies Tony Romo deadline

Tue, 28 Mar 2017 17:12:50 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will know his fate by training camp at the latest, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones said he has talked to Romo in the last couple of days, saying the veteran quarterback "has options."

Fantasy Tip: It's somewhat of a cryptic message from Jones, but Romo's options are essentially that he will be cut or traded and play for another team or simply retire. He is not expected to remain with the Cowboys. Romo has QB1 potential when he is healthy, but he has only played in five games in the last two seasons. He's just too risky to be drafted at this point, especially considering his ambiguous future.
