The Chicago Bears lost LB Nick Roach (Raiders) to free agency, and it's uncertain if free-agent LB Brian Urlacher (Bears) will join him in leaving. The team has seven linebackers under contract, with only LBs Lance Briggs and Blake Costanzo having started an NFL game. LBs Dom DeCicco, Jerry Franklin, J.T. Thomas, Patrick Trahan and Lawrence Wilson could see more responsibilities in 2013.

If the Chicago Bears are unable to work out a deal to bring back free-agent LB Brian Urlacher (Bears), that would leave LB Lance Briggs as the only starter remaining from last season which is under contract in 2013.

Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs defended comments made by LB Brian Urlacher, who feels the team's home fans are too harsh. Briggs feels Urlacher was just being honest. "I understand where he's coming from," Briggs said. "I've been here a long time, too and I've (heard) a lot of boos. For a lot of the wrong reasons. Nobody, on any team I've seen, gets booed more at home than here in Chicago. That's also a point to the passion of the Chicago fans. Everyone is passionate, but everyone in Chicago doesn't know how to run a football team. Everyone doesn't know how to play professional football. It's our job to do that."

The Chicago Bears were at it again in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, posting two more defensive scores. CB Charles Tillman had the first defensive score on his 32nd career interception, returning it 36 yards for a TD. Tillman's seven defensive scores is a franchise record. LB Lance Briggs also had a 36-yard interception return for a score. Both players scored TDs in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys, too. Since 2004, the Bears own a 21-5 record when the defense scores a TD. During the span, they have 23 interceptions for score and seven fumble returns for touchdown.

The Chicago Bears defense allowed 18 points to the Dallas Cowboys in the Week 4 game Monday, Oct. 1, and they yielded 430 total net yards, including just 41 net yards rushing. The Bears also sacked QB Tony Romo once, and picked up five interceptions. SS Major Wright led the way with two interceptions, while CB Charles Tillman had a 25-yard interception return for touchdown, and LB Lance Briggs returned an interception 74 yards for score. Since 2004, the Bears own a 20-5 record when the defense scores a TD. Tillman now has 31 career interceptions, with six returned for touchdowns. It was the third career TD for Briggs.

Updating a previous item, Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs' new deal pays $17.5 million over three years, $5 million of which is fully guaranteed. In 2012, Briggs gets $3 million to sign, a $3 million base salary, and a $250,000 workout bonus, giving him $6.25 million. Next year, Briggs is due to receive a $1 million roster bonus in June and a $4.5 million base salary, $2 million of which is fully guaranteed. He also is eligible for a $250,000 workout bonus. In 2014, Briggs is due to receive a $500,000 roster bonus in June and a non-guaranteed base salary of $4.75 million. He also is eligible to receive a $25,000 workout bonus.

Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs is under contract through the 2013 season, although before last season he stated he wanted a new deal or he wanted to be traded. Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith is hopeful a resolution will come soon. "I did have a chance to talk to Lance a little bit," Smith said. "Lance is family to us. Again, you're talking about a guy who's been here every day I've been here, and plays better football every year. He knows how much we like him and want him to be a Bear forever. So yes I've talked to him. Hopefully things are getting better on that front."

Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs said that he and his teammates are not seeing eye-to-eye with management. Briggs went on to say that the relationship has been different in 2011. "In the past, things have just worked themselves out. I think there's a big transition going on right now in Chicago," Briggs said. "The players and the management are not seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of different issues and a lot of different player's situations. I don't know where it's going to go and how it's going to pan out." Briggs is among a handful of Bears who have voiced their displeasure with their current contract situation or role on the team this season.

Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher admits defenders are experiencing trust issues, but he denied that he and LB Lance Briggs were arguing with each other on the sidelines during the team's Week 5 loss to the Detroit Lions. "Everyone asked me what happened after the game: 'Was I yelling at Lance on the sideline?' I said: 'I wasn't yelling at Lance on the sideline. He didn't do anything wrong,'" Urlacher said. "We were both mad because we aren't used to this. As long as (Briggs) and I have been here, we haven't played like this," Urlacher added. "We've had some spurts when we've been bad, but not for five games in a row when you get hit on big plays like that. So it's frustrating, but it's fixable."

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo stated that the team has no immediate plans to trade LB Lance Briggs (knee) based on his request. "What he's doing is not something that hasn't been done here in Chicago and around the league," Angelo said. "We feel very, very confident that Lance's focus is going to be on the season and having a great year, and we'll just take care of our business when that time comes. And that'll be at the end of the year." Briggs returned to practice Monday, Sept. 5, and is expected to start in Week 1 of the regular season against the Atlanta Falcons.

The agent for Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs, Drew Rosenhaus, has filed a formal request to seek a trade on his behalf. "The Bears made their decision, now I have to make mine," Briggs said. "It's just how the business works. It's not going to take away from what I do on the field. I'm 100 percent." Briggs recently approached the team about a raise, but upper management has not budged.
