The San Diego Chargers were expected to have LBs Melvin Ingram (knee) and Jarret Johnson at outside linebacker in Week 1. However, Ingram is likely done for the season, meaning LB Larry English might be in line for a bigger role. The team also has LB Tourek Williams, a sixth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, as well as LBs Frank Beltre and Devan Walker on the roster. The team is expected to explore their options in free agency.

After blowing a fourth-quarter lead in Week 12, San Diego Chargers LB Jarret Johnson was critical of his team, saying they do not know how to close games out. The Chargers are 1-4 in one-score games this season. "It's just really frustrating because we've shown we can play. I've been on bad teams, riddled with injuries, bad guys, dysfunctional. This team is every bit the opposite of that," Johnson said. "We've shown we're a talented team, offensively and defensively. And at the same time, we've turned around and proven time and again that we just don't know how to win."

San Diego Chargers rookie OLB Melvin Ingram will play outside linebacker for the team. He is expected to improve their pass rush and their third-down defense. Ingram recorded 19 sacks and 26 tackles for a loss in the last two seasons at South Carolina. "He's a playmaker and he's going to bring the heat, which is what we're looking for," general manager A.J. Smiths said. Head coach Norv Turner said Ingram is the most versatile, complete linebacker in the draft.
The team plans to have OLBs Shaun Phillips and Jarret Johnson start at outside backer, but don't view Ingram and Antwan Barnes as backups at the position. The team also has OLBs Travis LaBoy and Larry English on roster. Smith said the team's goal is to have four or five outside linebackers that can rotate in and rush the passer. "Our goal is to try and get four of them creating havoc so that we can make it a little bit easier on the guys at the back end," Smith said.
