Patnhers.com reports former Carolina Panthers QB Steve Beuerlein and Gary Williams will form the broadcast team for the telecasts of the Carolina Panthers four preseason games, while Pete Yanity will return as the sideline reporter. Williams, who will handle the play-by-play duties, is the host of "The Morning Sports Page," the top-rated morning sports radio talk show in Charlotte. Yanity, sports director at WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, enters his fifth season as the Panthers sideline reporter for preseason contests.

Scott Fowler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports free agent QB Steve Beuerlein (Broncos) has not announced his retirement from the NFL, but has refused feelers from teams that wanted him to serve as the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. "It's not an impossibility, but it's an improbability," Beuerlein said Thursday, July 8. "I'm at peace with saying I'm done with playing. Probably." The 39-year-old Beuerlein is close to signing an agreement with CBS that will allow him to broadcast eight NFL games this season as a color analyst.

Lee Rasizer, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports free agent QB Steve Beuerlein (Broncos), who was released by the Denver Broncos on Monday, May 10, is not sure whether he will retire after 17 seasons in the NFL. A source close to Beuerlein indicated the veteran quarterback is likely to only consider a return to Denver, given his familiarity with the Broncos' offensive system, his close relationship with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and family considerations. His recent medical history is also a factor, as Beuerlein's 2003 season ended with a broken little finger in October. Beuerlein, who had two surgeries on his right hand, recently began throwing.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan has announced that the team intends to release QB Steve Beuerlein (finger/hand) on Monday, May 10, according to Andrew Mason of DenverBroncos.com, but it may not signal the end of his career with the team. "He's going to work out and make a decision later on as to if he's going to come back and play football," Shanahan said. "Right now, he doesn't know. He's got that injury and he's recuperating right now. He feels like he wants to play another year; he's just not sure if he wants to play another year." Beuerlein has undergone two surgeries in recent months, having had finger surgery in October 2003 (with several pins inserted in his finger to aid healing), as well as having a second operation performed during the offseason, to fix a problem between his ring finger and his pinkie.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday, March 4, said the team will address the backup quarterback position after the NFL Draft. He said the team needs to sit down next week to talk and go through some film again. In regards to Steve Beuerlein, Shanahan said the two sides haven't talked and he told Beuerlein to get away for a few months.

Coach Mike Shanahan has told the QB he wants him back next season. "The ball's in my court in terms of whether I want to keep playing or not, no doubt about it," Beuerlein said. The Rocky Mountain News reports Denver Broncos QB Brian Griese admitted his future with the team is unclear, especially now after the team has benched him in favor of QB Steve Beuerlein. For the first time in a while, head coach Mike Shanahan didn’t back his QB. “Our decisions will be based on people performing, not money,” Shanahan said. “Once I base playing time on the salary cap, on draft choices, I lose this football team.” If the Broncos were to release Griese after June 1, they would save $4.75 million he is due to earn in base salary in 2003. However, he would still count $2.1 million against the salary cap next year and $6.3 million against the cap in 2004.

According to the Associated Press, Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was close to benching QB Brian Griese during the second-half of Sunday’s win over the Rams in favor of QB Steve Beuerlein. However, Rams’ kicker Jeff Wilkins missed a field goal so Shanahan opted to leave Griese on the field. Griese threw two INTs and fumbled in the third quarter, but came out firing after he was almost sent to the bench. He hit 4-of-4 passes for 56 yards and a 23 yard TD on the deciding drive.

The Rocky Moutain News reports Denver Broncos QB Steve Beuerlein is working hard at his rehab from elbow surgery as he attempts to prove he should be the team's No. 2 QB. He is condensing five days of work into four at the Denver Broncos' training complex each week. Beuerlein is encouraged he will be fully cleared to at least work within the confines of the offense for the Broncos May mini-camp and be completely ready to go by the time training camp opens in July. "My mentality is to prove to myself and to everybody here that my arm is ready and let the chips fall where they may," he said. "Hopefully I'll be able to show them enough to where they'll feel comfortable going into the season with me as a backup."
