Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports former Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby has been cleared by doctors to play football again. An NFL source that regularly deals with teams said Thursday that Weathersby is reportedly back up to 205 pounds and is interested in returning to the league after appearing in just four games as a rookie in 2003 before a near-fatal car accident. It is doubtful the Bengals would re-sign him at this point.

The Associated Press reports a California state appeals court upheld the conviction of man convicted of a drive-by shooting that wounded former Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby. Juan Serna is serving a life sentence for the shooting.

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby (head), who suffered a serious head injury in an automobile accident in April, made a surprise visit to practice at Paul Brown Stadium Saturday, June 12. "I'm feeling much better than I did two months ago," Weathersby said. Weathersby will not play this season and the team will evaluate him in the future to determine his playing status for 2005.

Updating an ongoing story, Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby's (head) condition has been upgraded from serious to fair Tuesday, April 27. "Mr. Weathersby is now ready," a hospital spokesperson said, "to begin the rehabilitation phase of his recovery." It's the first time that Weathersby's head injury has been upgraded since he was involved in an April 12 automobile accident.

He is receiving aggressive, state-of-the-art medical treatment. At this point, it is too early to make any further statements. The Associated Press reports Juan Serna, 26, of Baldwin Park, Calif., was sentenced to multiple terms of life in prison Thursday, Feb. 5, for the drive-by shooting that wounded Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby. Serna was sentenced to two life terms plus one term of 25-years to life. Serna was found guilty by a jury of attempting to murder Weathersby and a second man, along with being convicted of two counts of shooting from a motor vehicle and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Weathersby was getting into his car April 20, 2003, when several alleged gang members in a white sport utility vehicle drove up and opened fire at him in an unincorporated area near his hometown of Duarte, Calif., authorities said. Weathersby and his friend were allegedly shot at because they were mistaken for rival gang members.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie CB Dennis Weathersby saw his first game action Sunday, Nov. 9, against the Houston Texans, and head coach Marvin Lewis said he looked good in the limited snaps he got. Weathersby was a gunshot victim in April and had been inactive every game until Sunday. Even with the team's cornerback injuries, though, it's not likely he'll see extensive action this week, as the Bengals plan to bring him along slowly.

"I feel like I am close to 100 percent," he said. "I feel really good about myself and my body, physically and emotionally. Each day I'm getting better and better." Weathersby lost what he said was half of his blood, and regaining his strength has been the biggest physical challenge. His goal is to make the roster and contribute, even as a special teams player and as a backup cornerback.

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Oregon State CB Dennis Weathersby (torso/arm) was shot in his hometown of Duarte, California on Sunday. Specifics of the incident were unavailable. Police did say that Weathersby was shot in the back under his lungs and the bullet exited the stomach subsequently entering and exiting his forearm. He was reportedly entering an acquaintance automobile at the time of the attack. How much rehabilitation will be needed and how it will affect his draft status is uncertain.
