The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. pleaded no contest to a felony assault charge Tuesday, Sept. 26. Manning was charged from an attack on a man in a restaurant in April. He was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend a year of anger management counseling, according to the district attorney's office. Manning was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service with a municipality or public agency or nationally recognized philanthropic organization not associated with the team.

Instead of trying to force receivers to the inside of the field where more help is waiting, like he did in Carolina and in college at UCLA, Manning is now being asked to force the receivers outside towards the sidelines. Also, instead of playing with his back to the ball, the new system requires Manning to cover receivers while facing the quarterback. ''This is a huge difference because he was used to playing with his back to the ball,'' defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. ''We want to see the quarterback. I think he's adjusting well.''

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. is facing a civil suit also from his incident at a Los Angeles Denny's. The alleged victim in the incident, Soroush Sabzi, is suing for assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress and conspiracy. He is seeking punitive damages. His attorney, Aviv L. Tuchman, said Sabzi is in consultation with a neurologist because of a concussion he allegedly suffered in the attack, faces possible knee surgery and also has a shoulder injury. In the Superior Court of California, plaintiffs cannot state an amount of damages they are seeking, "but it's going to be high,'' Tuchman said.

The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. and two former UCLA football players, including Jacksonville Jaguars rookie RB Maurice Drew, were charged with assault Thursday, May 18, for their alleged participation in an early morning fight at a restaurant in April. Manning was charged with one count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, according to Deputy District Attorney Karen Murcia. If convicted, Manning faces up to four years in state prison.

Sabzi still is seeking medical attention to determine the extent of his injuries. Manning was arrested early Sunday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon after a brawl at a Denny's in Los Angeles left Sabzi unconscious. Sabazi's attorney, Aviv Tuchman, said he's still investigating details of the incident, but he refuted a claim by Manning's agent that Manning left the restaurant before the attack. Tuchman said there was no provocation before the attack.
