Dennis Georgatos, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers CB Sammy Davis can take a significant step in improving his career Sunday, Aug. 20, when he makes his first start for the 49ers in an exhibition game against the Oakland Raiders. Davis will fill in for LCB Shawntae Spencer. Labeled a first-round flop in his three seasons with the Chargers, Davis joined the 49ers in the April trade that sent WR Rashaun Woods, another first-round disappointment, to San Diego. Davis has used a strong training camp to gain a foothold with the 49ers. "He's got decent size. He's got good range, good cover ability and he's certainly been an upgrade for us," head coach Mike Nolan said. "It always helps that you have more experience out there and he's got experience, which is unlike last year, when we had a lot of young guys who hadn't played." Davis said he remains thankful for his playing opportunities in San Diego but welcomed the trade to the 49ers. Nolan said Spencer is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 10 at Arizona. Davis said he would try to make the most of his additional repetitions and become a more consistent defender, beginning with Sunday's game.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan believes recently acquired 49ers CB Sammy Davis should compete immediately for a starting position. "This was an opportunity for us to strengthen ourselves at a position of need with a proven NFL starter," said Nolan on the trade. "Davis will be able to step in from day one and challenge for a starting role."
