Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns C Alonzo Ephraim is able to play with his team during the preseason despite his suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The suspension does not take effect until Sept. 2. After his suspension is up, the team will have one week to decide whether or not to keep Ephraim on the roster, but given the team's lack of depth at center, it is possible they will bring him back.

ClevelandBrowns.com reports the NFL issued the following statement concerning Cleveland Browns OC Alonzo Ephraim: "Alonzo Ephraim of the Cleveland Browns has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2006 regular season for violating the NFL Substance Abuse Policy. He will be eligible to rejoin the Browns' active roster Monday, October 2."

Patrick McManamon, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns OC Alonzo Ephraim will reportedly be suspended by the league for violating the substance-abuse policy, according to league sources. Ephraim will miss the first four games of the 2006 season, the sources said. The suspension is for a failed test with a previous team, but it's not known where. According to sources, the Browns did not have the complete information about the suspension before Ephraim signed July 29.

Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports Cleveland Browns OC Bob Hallen has temporarily left the team. The Browns placed Hallen on the exempt-left team list Tuesday evening, Aug. 8. Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said Hallen was dealing with "medical and personal issues" and wasn't with the team. Hallen practiced Monday morning, Aug. 7, didn't practice Monday afternoon due to what Crennel called "back issues", and didn't report to Berea Tuesday. He spoke to Crennel and explained his situation. "He gave me good enough reason to have some concern on my part," Crennel said. OC Alonzo Ephraim will likely be the team's starting center in the interim.
