Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Seth Marler failed a physical exam required to complete a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. Marler was to be sent to the Cowboys in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick, but will now return to the Jaguars. The teams did not release the reason for the failed physical.

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Seth Marler realizes that he is currently the underdog in the battle against incumbent PK Josh Scobee for the team's place kicking job. "I feel after the year Josh had, it's his job to lose," Marler said. "I think both of us are hitting the ball great right now. Our field goals are good. My kickoffs from a year ago to now have gotten extremely better and Josh is one of the best kickoff guys in the league." Thus far, Scobee has outperformed Marler during practice.

Scobee is the incumbent and Marler has been inconsistent and injury-prone in his career, but the Jaguars still aren't ready to give up on what they consider a live leg just yet.

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Seth Marler is being kept on the roster to challenge incumbent PK Josh Scobee. Why is Marler still on the roster after missing all of 2004 with a leg injury? "Because Seth has the ability to be a very, very good kicker in the National Football League, and you just don't put guys like that out on the street,'' Jaguars special teams coordinator Pete Rodriguez said Tuesday, June 7. Rodriguez said the Scobee-Marler battle will continue into training camp. "We're happy with Josh, but we want to make sure he keeps his head straight and knows he still has to compete,'' Rodriguez said.

With the Jaguars adding two PKs during the offseason – veteran Jeff Chandler and rookie selection Josh Scobee – there's a chance Marler, who hit just 60.6 percent of his field goals in 2003, won't even be with the team when training camp begins.

The Jaguars are considering taking a kicker in the sixth round of the April 24-25 NFL Draft, according to Jaguars vice president of player personnel James "Shack'' Harris. Jacksonville has struggled with kicking accuracy and kickoff distance since 2001, with the recent woes continuing in 2003. Jaguars PK Seth Marler made only 20-of-33 kicks, giving the Jaguars the league's worst field-goal kicking percentage (61 percent) last season.

Updating ongoing reports, Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars rookie PK Seth Marler is listed as the starting kicker on the depth chart released on Tuesday. However, head coach Jack Del Rio said kickers James Tuthill and Danny Boyd should not be counted out. "Those guys are battling, and it's still wide open," Del Rio said. The coach also said that he will most likely keep two kickers, one for field goals and one for kickoffs.

According to the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville Jaguars PK Seth Marler impressed head coach Jack Del Rio over the weekend with a 55-yard field goal Del Rio said might have been good from 65 yards. "Seth Marler showed what kind of good, live legs we have here," Del Rio said. "That was a really nice hit. That competition is going to be fun to watch." Marler is the prime competition for PK James Tuthill, whom the Jaguars bought in from the Washington Redskins.

Tuthill finished the spring 12 of 15 from between 35 and 45 yards, while Boyd was 10 of 15. Despite the lower accuracy, the Jaguars say they still like Marler because of his leg strength and kickoff ability.

Updating previous reports, Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio singled out incumbent PK Danny Boyd on Wednesday, June 18. "Danny Boyd has done real well this off-season, and adding (James Tuthill) and (Seth Marler) has made it an interesting matchup," Del Rio said. Boyd has converted 9-of-12 field-goal attempts from between 35 and 45 yards this spring.
