"I feel after the year Josh had, it's his job to lose," Marler said. "I think both of us are hitting the ball great right now. Our field goals are good. My kickoffs from a year ago to now have gotten extremely better and Josh is one of the best kickoff guys in the league." Thus far, Scobee has outperformed Marler during practice.

Why is Marler still on the roster after missing all of 2004 with a leg injury? "Because Seth has the ability to be a very, very good kicker in the National Football League, and you just don't put guys like that out on the street,'' Jaguars special teams coordinator Pete Rodriguez said Tuesday, June 7. Rodriguez said the Scobee-Marler battle will continue into training camp. "We're happy with Josh, but we want to make sure he keeps his head straight and knows he still has to compete,'' Rodriguez said.

The Jaguars are considering taking a kicker in the sixth round of the April 24-25 NFL Draft, according to Jaguars vice president of player personnel James "Shack'' Harris. Jacksonville has struggled with kicking accuracy and kickoff distance since 2001, with the recent woes continuing in 2003. Jaguars PK Seth Marler made only 20-of-33 kicks, giving the Jaguars the league's worst field-goal kicking percentage (61 percent) last season.

However, head coach Jack Del Rio said kickers James Tuthill and Danny Boyd should not be counted out. "Those guys are battling, and it's still wide open," Del Rio said. The coach also said that he will most likely keep two kickers, one for field goals and one for kickoffs.
