Patriots | Sullivan tries to clear his name

Thu, 24 Aug 2006 05:38:06 -0700

John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots DL Johnathan Sullivan knows what has been said about him and he's trying to clear his name. He disagrees with what has been written, but what really burns him is the belief that he's a drug user. "People are saying I'm on drugs and doing drugs and dealing drugs," Sullivan said. "I've never ever been associated with drugs. My record's clean. I offered to take a drug test right then and there at the scene. The NFL still put me in the program. For what, I don't know, but I don't mind coming in and using the bathroom two or three times a week. I'm clean. That's the main thing." Sullivan also took issue with reports that he has been arrested before his arrest in June. A court date is set for Aug. 31, the day the Patriots play their preseason finale against the Giants. Sullivan hopes to have the charges dismissed. He will be represented by his attorney and isn't required to attend. He's listed at 315 pounds and clearly in better shape than he was when camp began. He said he's beginning to grasp the intricacies of playing in a 3-4 vs. a 4-3.

Saints | J. Sullivan on watch again

Sun, 04 Jun 2006 08:59:56 -0700

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints DT Johnathan Sullivan's progress is a big topic around Saints camp every year, but this is probably the most critical offseason yet for Sullivan, a former first-round draft pick. With a new coaching staff that has already replaced several veterans, Sullivan will have to earn his place based on merit. Sullivan seems optimistic about his chances, saying he reported at 328 pounds to this weekend's minicamp, compared to 350 or 355 in years past, and that coaches have told him to be below 318 by training camp. He showed some fatigue during the first set of two-a-day practices in the summer heat Friday, June 2, and head coach Sean Payton didn't seem pleased with it, but the jury is still out. "It's not a big topic for me," Payton said. "I mean, I expect from him like I would anyone else, the same expectation level we have for anyone on this team. When it becomes a big topic, then it's a problem, probably."

Saints | Sullivan Working with the First Team

Sat, 20 Aug 2005 23:10:58 -0700

Les East, of the Advocate, reports New Orleans Saints DL Johnathan Sullivan practiced with the first team defense, ahead of DT Howard Green, at practice Saturday, Aug. 20. "Johnathan has had two good games in a row, so we're going to get him more work," head coach Jim Haslett said after practice. "I think the last two games he has made the most tackles of all the defensive linemen. Now we're looking for consistency. He only played 14 plays last week, so we'll see what he can do with 40 or 50 plays."

Saints | Sullivan Making Strides

Fri, 29 Jul 2005 20:47:31 -0700

Chris Pika, of NewOrleansSaints.com, reports New Orleans Saints DL Johnathan Sullivan began training camp lighter than what was anticipated. "I thought Johnathan was in great shape," head coach Jim Haslett said. "He checked in at 320 pounds. He looks slim, and he told us he is going to get down to 310. That's a start. That's stage one. Now, he has to gain the trust of his teammates and the coaches back. Obviously, his play and what he does on the field will attest to everything. His reporting to camp at 320 pounds instead of 350 pounds shows that hopefully he is over the hump. I think that's stage one. I think if he can keep doing what he has done in this offseason and working the way he has been working, then it will pay off for him."

Saints | Disappointing Sullivan Must Step Up

Mon, 25 Jul 2005 23:32:14 -0700

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints DL Johnathan Sullivan has been a major disappointment since the Saints took him with the sixth overall choice in the 2003 draft, and he has yet to make an impact on defense. His salary-cap figure will probably guarantee him a roster spot for at least one more year, but the Saints aren't counting on him like they have in the past. "Sullivan's at a stage where he has to prove it to us," said defensive coordinator Rick Venturi. "We no longer say he has to be there."
