Cowboys | Jason Witten restructures

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 07:36:47 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten restructured his contract Thursday, Sept. 8, to create $2.75 million in salary cap space. The Cowboys converted $5.5 million of Witten's $6.5 million base salary into a signing bonus, which reduced Witten's cap number from $8.612 million to $5.862 million. Witten is signed through 2017 and is set to make $7.4 million next season with a cap figure of $12.262 million.

Fantasy Tip: Witten has declined in recent years after playing in 16 games for 12 straight seasons. He could receive a hefty amount of targets with rookie Dak Prescott under center, but Witten lacks separation as evidenced by his 9.3 yards per catch last season. Witten is a midrange starter in PPR leagues, but his yardage and touchdowns may not measure up.

49ers | Bruce Miller playing some receiver

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 20:51:41 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Bruce Miller has been lining up at tight end and receiver at times, head coach Chip Kelly said. Miller said he has lost some weight for his new role and has been studying Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten to improve his route running.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like the 49ers are planning on including Miller in the offense to some degree, but it remains to be seen if he can provide fantasy-relevant numbers. Leave him on the waiver wire for now.

Cowboys | Jason Witten continues to be iron man

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 19:17:25 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten played in all 16 games for a 12th straight season in 2015, and despite four quarterbacks last season he managed to snag a team-high 77 receptions. Witten came off the field for a total of seven snaps out of a possible 1,019 plays.

Fantasy Tip: Witten has to miss some time in 2016, as he isn't getting any younger and the percentages just aren't on his side. Tony Romo should be back to 100 percent health, which is good, but Witten should be viewed only as a Top 15 option at his position for fantasy purposes, as a decline is likely.

Cowboys | Jason Witten planning to stick around?

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 18:56:59 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he is taking his career one year at a time, but he added that he would play another seven years if he remains healthy and can play at a high level.

Fantasy Tip: Witten managed to catch 77 passes for 713 yards in 2015 despite playing just four games with Tony Romo. He may not be an elite fantasy option at his position anymore, but he is still a TE1, especially in PPR formats.

Cowboys | Jason Witten a top tight end again

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 16:34:37 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten finished as a No. 1 fantasy tight end for the twelfth season in a row.

Fantasy Tip: With the quarterback play in Dallas last season, this might come as a surprise to some. Yet, Witten maintained good health and still managed to finish as a TE1 with 77 catches for 712 yards and three touchdowns. He finished even higher in PPR formats. He's not an elite fantasy tight end option like he used to be, but he's probably in underrate territory at this point in his career.

Cowboys | Jason Witten probable for Week 17

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 14:33:52 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) participated fully in practice Friday, Jan. 1, and is probable for the Week 17 game against the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: With Dallas employing a slow-paced offense focused on the ground attack, Witten's ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) fantasy value is on the decline. He received just two targets in Week 16, and should be viewed as a risky FantasyScore play this weekend.

Cowboys | Full practice for Jason Witten

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 13:55:47 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) participated fully in practice Thursday, Dec. 31.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) and the rest of the Cowboy's pass-catchers have minimal value with Kellen Moore at quarterback. There are better options at tight end on FantasyScore for Week 17.

Cowboys | Full practice for Jason Witten

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 16:34:48 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) had just one catch for 12 yards with Kellen Moore at the helm last week, and it's hard to recommend the veteran tight end again in Week 17. Look elsewhere for your tight end on FantasyScore.

Cowboys | Jason Witten sets franchise record

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 13:13:35 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten caught a pass in his 118th consecutive game Sunday, Dec. 27. He broke Michael Irvin's franchise record for most consecutive games with a catch.

Fantasy Tip: Witten has had a bit of an off year by his standards, although he does lead the Cowboys by a wide margin with 71 receptions. Witten is still a low-end TE1 option for next season's fantasy drafts.

Cowboys | Jason Witten expected to play

Fri, 25 Dec 2015 15:55:47 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 25, and is listed as probable for the Week 16 game against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) could receive a bigger role in the offense this week because of the injuries the team has a wide receiver. He has caught at least five passes in five of his last seven games but has not scored a touchdown since Week 1. Owners on FantasyScore probably will be able to find better options to use in their lineups.

Cowboys | Jason Witten, Cole Beasley limited

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 13:00:03 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) and WR Cole Beasley (knee, illness) were limited participants in practice Thursday, Dec. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) and Beasley ($2,500, 5.0%) should still be able to play unless they suffer any setbacks, but they can't really be trusted to produce with Kellen Moore at quarterback. Witten is a safer bet, though, and could be the safety blanket for Moore in Week 16.

Cowboys | Jason Witten limited at practice

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:08:34 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (chest) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has exactly five catches in each of the past three weeks for 135 yards, so while he is reliable and has a decent floor, his upside is limited. At best, he is a low-end TE1 in seasonal leagues and an against-the-grain option at FantasyScore for Week 16.

Cowboys | Jason Witten targeted frequently

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 22:46:32 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten posted five receptions for 45 yards in the Week 13 game against the Washington Redskins Monday, Dec. 7. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Witten became just the second tight end in NFL history to eclipse the 1,000-catch mark for a career earlier in the game. He will always get work with a player like Matt Cassel under center, as his passing radius isn't as great as their starter, Tony Romo. He remains a decent FantasyScore option going forward.

Cowboys | Jason Witten passes milestone

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 18:13:27 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten posted his 1,000th career reception in the second quarter of the Week 13 game against the Washington Redskins Monday, Dec. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Witten hasn't done much for FantasyScore players so far, but no one has in a scoreless game midway through the second quarter. Of course the milestone catch was good for a first down, too.

Cowboys | Jason Witten nearing record

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 13:18:16 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten needs six catches to become the fourth player in NFL history with 12 total -- and 12 consecutive -- seasons of at least 50 receptions.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) has epitomized consistency throughout his career, and he's putting another solid season under his belt in 2015. His matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week isn't the most favorable, however, as the Bucs have only allowed four scores to tight ends and are allowing 46.13 yards per game to the position.

Cowboys | Jason Witten hauls in six catches

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 22:20:42 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten posted six receptions for 43 yards in the Week 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) is a decent mid-level FantasyScore option, as he continues to look a little more comfortable working with Matt Cassel.

Cowboys | Jason Witten gets ankle re-taped

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 15:47:14 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankle) left the Week 8 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a right ankle injury. He left to have his right ankle re-taped and he was able to return later.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) had a very quiet first three quarters, which is to be expected against a strong Seattle defense with a less-than-quality quarterback throwing to him.

Cowboys | Jason Witten should expect physical game

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 16:34:57 -0700

The New England Patriots have been planning on playing a physical game with Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten in their Week 5 matchup.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) isn't on the team's injury report anymore, but he's already a little beat up with lower-body injuries. However, Brandon Weeden will likely have to rely on him often in a game in which they'll likely have to air it out frequently. Witten should be a safe FantasyScore tight end.

Cowboys | Jason Witten has so-so evening

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 22:07:38 -0700

New Orleans Saints TE Jason Witten had four receptions for 57 yards in the Week 4 game against the Dallas Cowboys. He was targeted six times.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) had a disappointing stat line considering the struggles of the Saints against opposing tight ends. Still, it wasn't half bad. He remains a solid FantasyScore option, especially if Lance Dunbar is sidelined for a while. Witten is a nice safety valve option for Brandon Weeden.

Cowboys | Jason Witten should thrive in Week 4

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 17:02:16 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten faces the New Orleans Saints in Week 4, and the Saints have allowed the second-most receiving yards to opposing tight ends this year.

Fantasy Tip: With Tony Romo sidelined, Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) was leaned on by quarterback Brandon Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) in Week 3, finishing with six catches for 65 yards. He should do even more damage against the struggling New Orleans defense and is a strong play at FantasyScore.

Cowboys | Jason Witten probable against Saints

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 14:04:52 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) practiced in full Friday, Oct. 2, and is probable for Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: The Saints have allowed a whopping 20.6 fantasy points (PPR leagues) per game to tight ends through three weeks, including three touchdowns. Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) is hobbled but still managed six catches for 65 yards last week. Backup Brandon Weeden should continue to look his way often. Witten is a strong FantasyScore option Sunday night.

Cowboys | Jason Witten practices in full

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 16:15:38 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankle, knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) should be one of the leaders in targets in the Week 4 game against the New Orleans Saints. Owners should consider using Witten in their lineup unless he suffers a setback.

Cowboys | Jason Witten worth a look in Week 4

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 21:21:49 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten faces the New Orleans Saints in Week 4, and it's a favorable matchup for the veteran. The Saints are the worst NFC defense against opposing tight ends, allowing 17 receptions, 268 yards and three touchdowns through three games.

Fantasy Tip: While FantasyScore players might run from Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) because his starting QB is Brandon Weeden ($5,000, 10.0% of cap), that actually be the reason to run to him. Weeden doesn't have the field vision Tony Romo does, and he'll likely be using more short and intermediate routes, which means more targets for Witten. Against a bad New Orleans defense, Witten is a strong DFS play.

Cowboys | Jason Witten practices in full

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:09:30 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankle, knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has been able to play with the injuries and should be on the field against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4. Witten should have a big role in the passing game and is a solid starting option because of the matchup.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) is feeling well, and head coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday, Sept. 30, the team anticipates Witten's injuries are behind him.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) had a solid six catches for 65 yards in Week 3, and he remains a good FantasyScore option against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

Cowboys | Jason Witten has decent afternoon

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 22:07:19 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten posted six receptions for 65 yards in the Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He was targeted eight times.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) did not show any lingering effects of his ankle and knee injuries. Since Brandon Weeden has a much smaller throwing radius than Tony Romo, Witten and the running backs are likely to factor into the passing game more. That's good news for Witten's FantasyScore outlook.

Cowboys | Jason Witten expected to play

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 13:41:00 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) practiced in full Friday, Sept. 25, and is probable for Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: There's plenty of reason to be concerned with Witten's ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) lower body injuries in this one. However, with both Tony Romo (clavicle) and Dez Bryant (foot) out, Brandon Weeden should be looking to dump the ball off to Witten often. In point-per-reception formats like FantasyScore, Witten is the definition of a risk/reward pick.

Cowboys | Jason Witten expected to play

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 16:18:12 -0700

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Sept. 24, but he is expected to play in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) is as tough as they come. It's hard to say how effective he can be with multiple leg injuries, but with Tony Romo (clavicle) and Dez Bryant (foot) out, Witten should see plenty of targets from Brandon Weeden. Witten is a risk/reward play on FantasyScore.

Cowboys | Jason Witten listed as limited

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 14:03:25 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankle, knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Witten's ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) status for Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons is still uncertain, so owners should continue to monitor the situation. Owners may want to consider other options because Witten may be limited by the injuries if he does play.

Cowboys | Jason Witten limited

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 15:36:47 -0700

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Even if he was limited, the fact that Witten is practicing is encouraging. He should be able to play in Week 3, but he'll have Brandon Weeden throwing to him instead of Tony Romo. Tread carefully if you're considering investing in Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) on FantasyScore this week.

Cowboys | Jason Witten practicing Wednesday

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 10:16:37 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) is practicing Wednesday, Sept 23.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) practicing this early bodes well for him against the Atlanta Falcons. However, with a multitude of injuries and a backup quarterback at the helm, it's a lot to ask for to deliver on this FantasyScore price tag.

Cowboys | Jason Witten may miss Week 3

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 07:39:03 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) isn't a lock to play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) appears to be a much bigger risk than his price warrants on FantasyScore with Tony Romo (clavicle) out.

Cowboys | Jason Witten beat up

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 10:12:42 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (ankles, knee) suffered two sprained ankles and a sprained knee in the Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. "It was one of those nasty games -- I have some bumps and bruises and rolled the ankle a little bit -- I'll be fine," Witten said. "Just typical football. Sometimes those things happen."

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) expects to be fine for Week 3, but with no Tony Romo (broken clavicle) now, it'll be hard to rely on Witten on FantasyScore, especially if he's not 100% healthy.

Cowboys | Jason Witten hauls in seven catches

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 21:52:14 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten posted seven receptions for 56 yards in the Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was targeted eight times.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) posted two touchdowns last week, so he took a step backwards. His FantasyScore appeal also takes a hit with Brandon Weeden set to take over for at least eight weeks with Tony Romo (clavicle) sidelined.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant to have surgery Tuesday

Mon, 14 Sep 2015 09:27:36 -0700

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will have surgery to fix a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to a source. Bryant is expected to miss four to six weeks. The Cowboys have their bye on Oct. 18, so Bryant could return Oct. 26 against the New York Giants. WRs Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley and TE Jason Witten will likely be focal points in the offense with Bryant out. WR Devin Street will likely start in Bryant's spot with Beasley primarily working in the slot.

Fantasy Tip: With Bryant out, the rest of Dallas' offensive weapons all receive a boost to their fantasy value on a week-to-week basis except probably Tony Romo. Williams ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) should now be universally owned. Take a flier on Street ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) in more cavernous leagues or as a deep sleeper on FantasyScore starting in Week 2.

Cowboys | Jason Witten scores pair of TDs

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 22:33:03 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten had eight receptions for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Week 1 win against the New York Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) might be getting a little long in the tooth, but he showed he still has plenty left in the tank. If you don't want to spend premium salary on a top FantasyScore option, you can still get some solid points out of Witten at a mid-level price.

Cowboys | Tony Romo wins game with TD

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 21:23:33 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to TE Jason Witten with seven seconds remaining, giving the Cowboys a 27-26 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Romo ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) showed he has some intestinal fortitude in this game. Whether he has permanently shed the image of a quarterback that chokes in the big games remains to be seen. He has done enough for now to be a strong QB1 in your lineup and a solid FantasyScore selection.

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:54:05 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten faces the New York Giants Sunday, Sept. 13, and he has five touchdowns on 24 targets in his last four games against the Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Witten ($5,100, 10.2%) might not be an elite fantasy tight end these days, but he is still a reliable option at the position. Facing a very friendly matchup in week 1, he is worth starting at FantasyScore.

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 11:21:27 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (undisclosed) did not play Sunday, Aug. 23, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: This may have just been a rest day for Witten as he hasn't had any reported injuries in recent weeks. The Cowboys are probably being cautious with their starting veteran tight end. He's a TE1 again this year, especially in PPR formats.

Cowboys | Jason Witten has stayed healthy

Mon, 13 Jul 2015 10:48:29 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten has not missed a start since the 2006 season.

Fantasy Tip: Witten has been one of the better tight ends in the NFL for several seasons in part because he has stayed on the field. He should continue to have a solid role in the passing game this season and could be a No. 1 tight end in most leagues.

Sat, 11 Jul 2015 18:51:47 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten was one of three tight ends to be on the field for more than 1,000 snaps last year.

Fantasy Tip: Witten has had at least 64 catches and least 700 yards in every season dating back to 2004, and while he isn't an elite fantasy tight end anymore, he is still a safe bet to provide TE1 numbers.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said Sunday, May 17, that he and QB Tony Romo could play four or five more years if they continue to play like they did last season.

Fantasy Tip: Witten is no longer an elite fantasy tight end, but he still finished in the top 10 in catches and receiving yards at the position last season. He should be considered a low-end TE1 heading into 2015.

Cowboys | Jason Witten practicing

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 09:24:41 -0800

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (knee) is participating in practice Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Witten injured his knee in the team's Week 16 game, but it does not appear like a serious injury. Witten is coming off a solid game with 90 receiving yards and one touchdown but has also been pretty quiet for most of the season. He will be facing a Washington Redskins defense that has allowed the most fantasy points to tight ends over the past month. Owners on FantasyScore should consider Witten a low-end No. 1 tight end in Week 17.

"He's done it for a long time and he's someone who has had a lot of success in this league and he knows what to do to take care of your body in season and out of season, so it helped extremely a lot and I have to thank him and we're still working together."

Fantasy Tip: It's tough to drop someone like Jason Witten with his history. There are a slew of better options at this point in the season, however. He's not worth the risk of $5,700 on FantasyScore.

Cowboys | Jason Witten nears milestone

Fri, 03 Oct 2014 18:59:30 -0700

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten needs 45 yards in Week 5 against the Houston Texans to hit 10,000 for his career, joining former Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez (15,127) and former Denver Broncos TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) as the only tight ends in NFL history to hit the milestone.

Fantasy Tip: The Texans rank 15th in the NFL against the pass, allowing 237.5 passing yards per game with five touchdowns through four games. Witten should be in line for a decent day, and remains a Top 10 fantasy option at his position. At $5700 (or 15.4 percent of your salary cap) in FantasyScore, he is a strong option.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray, Jason Witten expected to sit

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 09:13:08 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray and TE Jason Witten are not expected to play in the first preseason game, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Neither player needs to play in the first preseason game but should receive playing time at some point during the preseason. Both players should be considered starters at their positions in most fantasy leagues.
