In some ways it's a blessing in disguise that we got the thing cleaned out so that he can play in a few weeks," head coach Jon Gruden said.

The extension, which was added to his current contract, makes his new deal a five-year deal, worth $8.6 million. Askew will receive $2.2 million in guaranteed money, including a $2 million signing bonus. The contract includes $1 million in performance and Pro Bowl incentives.

Askew is entering the final year of his contract with the Buccaneers and is scheduled to have a cap value of $840,000 in 2008. Negotiations between the team and Askew's agent are ongoing. "It's something I think will take care of itself," Askew said of his contract situation. "The Bucs know what they have. It's a situation where they can sign me now and save themselves some money or they can wait and potentially have to pay me a lot more money (if I hit free agency). I just leave that to my agent and the Bucs, and just show up ready to work and help this team win."

Askew is not concerned about getting on the playing field for the 2008 season despite a backfield that includes RB Warrick Dunn, RB Earnest Graham, RB Michael Bennett and RB Cadillac Williams, and could feature another running back if the team opts to select a back in the 2008 NFL Draft. "I'm not worried about that at all," Askew said. "Coach Gruden knows what I can do. He knows he has an ace in the hole. I can do whatever he wants. I'm not vocal about anything like that. I'm glad to be playing and I don't mind blocking on every play if that's what is needed of me. Of course I want to get the ball in my hands, but I've matured a lot since my first two years and at this point I just want to win a championship."
