Browns | Team working on injury settlement with W. Green

Sat, 02 Sep 2006 18:57:56 -0700

Patrick McManamon, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports the Cleveland Browns placed RB William Green (quad) on Injured Reserve earlier Saturday, Sept. 2, but it may not last for long. The team is trying to work out an injury settlement with Green that would allow him to be released. There's a chance he could return following the settlement, but it's not likely. Green and RB Lee Suggs were beaten out by RB Jason Wright. The Browns tried to trade Green and Suggs all last week, but the efforts were for naught. Nobody would take Green, because he has two strikes under the league's substance-abuse policy, and a third means a year's suspension.

Even though he recently failed a New York Jets physical after an attempted trade, he appears to be healthy.

Browns | Suggs returns with an uncertain future

Wed, 16 Aug 2006 16:18:38 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports RB Lee Suggs returned to practice with the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, Aug. 16, uncertain what his future holds. "Things didn't work out, and so I guess I've got to go with what it is," said Suggs, traded to the New York Jets Monday, Aug. 14, and then returned to the Browns when he failed the New York physical exam Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, and the trade was nullified. "Whatever it is." It is an awkward situation for all parties concerned. Browns officials and coaches attempted to put the best spin possible on welcoming back to practice a player they had dealt away. The coaches worked with Suggs, even staying after the practice to watch as he fielded balls from a mechanical passing machine, and the fourth-year veteran running back did what was required of him. Clearly, Suggs was frustrated by the sudden reversal of fortunes, and by the uncertainty that lies ahead. Suggs said he prefers to remain with the Browns but allowed the numbers game could work against him.

Browns | Savage comments on Suggs

Tue, 15 Aug 2006 11:44:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage released a statement Tuesday, Aug. 15, on the state of RB Lee Suggs, who returned to the team after failing his physical with the New York Jets. "The parameters of the trade between the Jets and the Browns were that each player had to pass a physical. Both players have had injuries during their careers and unfortunately it didn't work out. This spring Lee Suggs has participated in every mini-camp practice and all of our OTA's. He has also participated in every practice during training camp and played in our first preseason game at Philadelphia last week (Aug.10). Medical opinions can vary from team to team, and obviously this is one team's opinion. We anticipate Lee Suggs returning to the Browns and working hard in practice and preparing for the season to the best of his ability, just as he has shown throughout his career with the Browns."

Mon, 14 Aug 2006 17:37:40 -0700

Tom Withers, of the Associated Press, reports the trade of RB Lee Suggs to the New York Jets by the Cleveland Browns means Browns' RB William Green is currently the team's No. 2 running back. "That's just the business of the NFL," Green said following practice. "It really doesn't make a difference to me." A year after he rushed for just 78 yards on 20 carries and spent most of the season covering kicks on special teams, Green's playing time is still not guaranteed. Head coach Romeo Crennel said the Suggs trade doesn't give Green an edge.

Browns | Suggs will open camp No. 2; but can he remain there?

Sun, 23 Jul 2006 17:49:36 -0700

Steve Doerschuk, writing for the Sporting News, reports Cleveland Browns talented, but often injured, RB Lee Suggs will open training camp as the team's No. 2 running back behind starting RB Reuben Droughns. Suggs is the most talented all-around back on the team. Suggs can also offer more breakaway runs both inside and outside. Suggs has bulked up to around 215 pounds, costing him just a shade of his good natural elusiveness. If he stays healthy, he could be the surprise player of 2006. If he is injured again, his days with the team may be numbered.

Browns | Interesting battle emerging for third-down back

Sun, 02 Jul 2006 19:44:15 -0700

Steve Doerschuk, writing for the Sporting News, reports Cleveland Browns rookie RB Jerome Harrison's shot at becoming the Browns' third-down back is based on special quickness. Coaches are entertaining the notion that Harrison is a better home-run threat than RB Lee Suggs, who has added weight to improve his durability. Suggs envisions himself as an all-around threat that can catch and block better than a rookie, but Harrison made a good first impression on coaches in spring drills.

Suggs will get his chance to prove he can make an impact on the team during training camp this season, "I'm going to let these guys compete to see who is the best. If he proves he's the best, then he'll play," said head coach Romeo Crennel.

It features RBs Lee Suggs, William Green, Jason Wright and rookie Jerome Harrison. "Lee and William both look good and have worked extremely hard in the off-season," Savage said. "William is really well-liked and well-respected here because of how he's conducted himself for the past 1 1/2 years." He said Suggs must prove he can stay healthy. Browns | W. Green No. 2 running back for now

Thu, 04 May 2006 06:25:40 -0700

Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said Browns RB William Green will remain the team's primary backup at running back heading into minicamp. "I think William is the incumbent as the second-string tailback," Savage said on a WTAM-AM draft show. "Someone's going to have to beat him out. The drafting of RB Jerome Harrison probably doesn't effect William Green as much as it would Lee Suggs or Jason Wright. Suggs, Wright and Harrison are slated to be third-down backs." Head Coach Romeo Crennel seems intent on keeping RB Reuben Droughns fresher in 2006. Droughns carried a franchise-record 309 times in 2005.

Savage added, "Lee is a talented player and he's just been hurt. He hasn't been able to get out there and show what he can do with this particular group. I think it doesn't really say anything either than it increases the competition."
