Mangini said, "Musa is a guy that we've looked at and where he brings value and flexibility is on special teams. He's done a lot on special teams over the course of his career. "I had a bad injury, a bad break, but I can't just curl up in a ball and cry about it," he said. "That's not what I chose to do. I chose to move forward and forget the negative stuff." Smith, who was told by doctors that he had a 50-50 chance of returning to football, said he never doubted that he would be suiting up again. Thus far, Smith has been running with the power and vision the front office believed he had all along. At times, Smith has been playing with the first-team offense instead of RB Jamal Lewis or RB Mike Anderson. Head coach Brian Billick said Smith has been great so far. "Boy, his enthusiasm (and) his energy overall have been great," said Billick.

However, that does not mean that Lewis will earn the majority of carries as Billick intends for Lewis, Anderson and RB Musa Smith to all be involved in the offense. Billick said, "I don't isolate starters, non-starters. It's about whoever is playing well. I don't have a distinct - Jamal is going to carry this many times. Mike and Musa (fourth-year man Musa Smith), they're all going to play. And I guess I've got to put someone out to start the game, and I guess that's technically the starter."

Ravens general manager and executive Ozzie Newsome believes any player who doesn't want a franchise tag shouldn't get one, and Lewis has made it clear he would prefer not to be tagged. The supply and demand of running backs will be on the supply side which works to the Ravens' advantage. Also, the Ravens own the 13th overall pick in a draft that is expected to have four running backs go in the first round, and Baltimore is expecting RB Musa Smith to be fully healed from a broken leg he suffered two seasons ago.

Smith said, "Since I went on IR, I've been basically laid back, doing cardio, working out a little bit, but basically giving it a rest. After I broke it, I was trying to get back on the field and pushing it. What the doctors thought, and what I thought, was that I needed a break and to lay low for basically two months and then start building up. That's what I'm about to do, starting next week. I'm about to start working up to my level."
