Titans | Announce several coaching moves

The Tennessee Titans have hired Jacksonville Jaguars running backs coach Sylvester Croom as their new running backs coach, former Detroit Lions wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson as their new wide receivers coach and former New Orleans Saints assistant coach George Henshaw as their tight ends coach. The team has announced that offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains will remain in that position and that former wide receivers coach Dave Ragone will now be the quarterbacks coach.

The Tennessee Titans announced Tuesday, Feb. 22, that they have named Dave Ragone as their new wide receiver coach. The team also added Art Valero as assistant offensive line coach, Chet Parlavecchio as assistant special teams coach and Arthur Smith as defensive assistant/quality control coach.

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Dave Ragone will have one final battle for the team's No. 3 quarterback position in the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 31. "Both will play a very significant amount in this game," said head coach Scott Linehan. Neither played in Saturday's 16-12 loss, Aug. 26, in Kansas City. Statistically, the two almost are in a dead heat.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Dave Ragone outperformed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19. Neither threw for a touchdown or turned the ball over, but Ragone led the team on two drives that netted 10 points. Ragone finished the night 9-of-11 for 76 yards with a passer rating of 95.5. Fitzpatrick finished 5-of-10 for 59 yards with a passer rating of 68.3 in his only possession. He took the team down to the 2-yard line at the end of the game trailing 27-20. However, the Rams failed to score on four plays and ended up losing to the Houston Texans. The two quarterbacks are competing for the No. 3 quarterback job with the team.

Steve Korte, of the News-Democrat, reports St. Louis Rams QBs Dave Ragone and Ryan Fitzpatrick will use training camp as their battlefield to become the team's No. 3 quarterback. "Obviously, Ryan has an edge because he's been here with the terminology we're using and had reps with the centers," head coach Scott Linehan said. "Dave has had a couple of quarterback exchange issues, but that happens when a guy hasn't been taking snaps from somebody, especially competitive snaps." Ragone does have an edge over Fitzpatrick when it comes to past history with Linehan.

Kathleen Nelson, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports newly acquired St. Louis Rams QB Dave Ragone could have a decent shot at a backup spot with the Rams. He worked under Rams head coach Scott Linehan as quarterback at the University of Louisville, where Linehan was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was released by the Houston Texans last month and claimed by both Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts May 24, but the Bengals picked him up because they had the worst record of the two.

Chick Ludwig, of the Dayton Daily News, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Wednesday, June 7, he expects to cut one of the team's five quarterbacks before training camp starts. QB Carson Palmer is the starting quarterback with QBs Anthony Wright, Doug Johnson, Dave Ragone and Erik Meyer in the mix as backups. "We won't take all five of these guys to training camp, so we'll have to make a decision on one of the guys soon," Lewis said. "We're not going to cut Carson, but one of those other four."

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports it is unclear where newly acquired Cincinnati Bengals QB Dave Ragone will fit in with the team. QBs Anthony Wright and Doug Johnson, who will be competing with Ragone to back up starting QB Carson Palmer (knee), already have two weeks of practicing in front of the team's coaching staff and have a better understanding of the offense. Ragone will not be getting snaps right away and will be getting evaluated by the staff through individual workouts until he can get learn the offense.

Chick Ludwig, writing for the Sporting News, reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Anthony Wright has taken the lead in the race to serve as the top backup quarterback for the team. The team has turned up the dial on its competition with the acquisition of QB Dave Ragone off waivers from the Houston Texans. Ragone joins Wright, QB Doug Johnson and rookie QB Erik Meyer in the four-man battle for two backup spots. Wright is showing the kind of poise, accuracy and leadership needed to run the no-huddle, fast-break offense that highlights the depth and talent at the skill positions.

Kris Krikes, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans QB Dave Ragone has been getting a lot of respect around the team's training camp thus far. "We call him the MVP (laughs)," WR Andre Johnson said. "Dave had a great year over in NFL Europe. Now he's out there playing well and as he goes along, he'll continue to get better." Ragone spent the offseason lighting things up for the Berlin Thunder. The southpaw completed 158 of 251 passes (62.9 percent), racking up 1,746 yards for 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions, to help lead his team to World Bowl XIII. With a league-leading 97.5 passer rating, Ragone was named the league's offensive MVP. He also set a NFL Europe record with his streak of 174 consecutive passes without an interception. For now, however, Ragone remains the Texans' third-string quarterback.
