New York Giants DL Chris Canty said teammate DL Jason Pierre-Paul has the potential to be as good as former NFL DL Reggie White. "There is really nobody in the league right now that you can compare him to," Canty said. "The only person that kind of sticks out where you can compare him to - and I can't believe I am saying this - but he reminds me a lot of Reggie White. His ability to play all those different positions and to impact the football game the way he does, he is an unbelievable talent."

ESPN.com reports Washington Redskins DL Albert Haynesworth said the team will not regret signing him to a lucrative contract. "You're not going to remember Albert Haynesworth as a bust," Haynesworth said. "With the contract, it's going to be all on me. Dylan B. Tomlinson, of PackersNews.com, reports Green Bay Packers chairman and CEO Bob Harlan sent his regrets for not being able to attend DL Reggie White's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday, Aug. 5. Harlan said, " I didn't want to miss Reggie's induction for anything. The timing of this is unfortunate. Everyone knows how much Reggie meant to the Packers, the city of Green Bay, and everyone he came to know. His induction will be a truly historic day for his family and this franchise, and I'm extremely disappointed I can't be there." Harlan was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital Thursday, Aug. 3, with a suspected gallstone.

Larry O'Rourke, of The Morning Call, reports Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he still feels cheated by not being able to sign DL Reggie White's paychecks. White will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday, Aug. 5. Lurie, who bought the team in 1995, said, "When I first got the call that the Eagles were available, the very first thought I had was, 'That's Reggie White's franchise.' You get the thought of the great fans, rabid city, but Reggie White - 'That's Reggie White's franchise.' It was a shock when he died (in December 2004). ... I'm very proud he was here. I feel so frustrated that I bought the team (two years) after he left, (but) we were able to keep up a wonderful relationship right up to the end."

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Hall of Fame DL Reggie White will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without a team affiliation. On the stage where induction speeches take place, White's mural will feature a portrait and an action shot. He will wear a Green Bay Packers uniform in one and a Philadelphia Eagles uniform in the either. Hall of Fame vice president of communications Joe Horrigan did not go into details on the layout of the mural, but said the three NFL teams White played for would be represented.

Although a sellout for the enshrinement ceremony is anticipated, a limited number of tickets remain available. The Associated Press reports former Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman and former NFL DE Reggie White have been chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Other finalists include RB Thurman Thomas, QB Warren Moon, LB Derrick Thomas, LB Harry Carson, DE L.C. Greenwood, DE Claude Humphrey, OL Russ Grimm, OL Bob Kuechenberg, OL Gary Zimmerman, WR Michael Irvin, WR Art Monk, OT Rayfield Wright and coach/broadcaster John Madden. A 39-member panel will vote on the finalists. Candidates must get 80 percent of the vote to be elected with a minimum of three and a maximum of six getting in. Results of the voting will be announced Feb. 4.

The Associated Press reports former Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman and DE Reggie White head a list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The class of 2006 will be determined at the selection committee's annual meeting Feb. 4 in Detroit, the day before the Super Bowl. The list has narrowed from 112 to 25. The list of 25 will be reduced by mail ballot to 13 modern-era candidates. The list will increase to 15 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the hall's seniors committee - this year's candidates are former Oakland Raiders head coach John Madden, and former Dallas Cowboys OT Rayfield Wright.

The preliminary list of people eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has been revealed, according to the Associated Press. Players eligible for the first time include DE Reggie White, QB Warren Moon, QB Troy Aikman, RB Thurman Thomas, WR Andre Reed, and C Dermontti Dawson. The Associated Press reports city officials in Green Bay will start considering next week naming streets after former Green Bay Packers QB Bart Starr, DL Reggie White and RB Tony Canadeo. "Canadeo was from the '40s, and then you've got Reggie White who's the '90s and Bart Starr who's the '60s," said Sandi Campbell of Green Bay. Her request and another request raised this week call for the renaming of Forward Street to Bart Starr Drive, Progress Street to Reggie White Way and Advance Street to Tony Canadeo Run. The requests will go to the city's Plan Commission next week and would then await consideration by city staff.

The Green Bay Packers have announced they will retire DE Reggie White's No. 92 at a ceremony September 18. The Packers will honor White at halftime ceremonies during the first regular-season game at Lambeau Field, a 3:15 p.m. kickoff with the Cleveland Browns. The team had told White last season, before his tragic death in December, that they would retire his number during the 2005 season.

Updating a previous report, NFL.com reports former NFL DE Reggie White might have died because of a respiratory disease called sarcoidosis combined with sleep apnea, according to a preliminary autopsy report. Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by the presence of small areas of inflamed cells that can attack any organ of the body, but is most frequently found in the lungs. As previously reported, White passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, from what was originally diagnosed as a heart attack. He was 43.

The Gaston Gazette reports the release earlier today of CB Eric Davis, FB William Floyd, LB Lee Woodall and OL James Dexter saved the Carolina Panthers close to $9.88 million in salary cap room. The is also expected to restructure the contracts of OL Bryan Stoltenberg, DL Sean Gilbert and CB Doug Evans. The team could free up an additional $2.15 million if DE Reggie White retires. Agent Jimmy Sexton was not available for comment, but he had earlier said White would decide before March 2.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers hope to re-sign S Mike Minter before the free agency period begins, but they could have a tough time now that Darren Sharper re-signed with Green Bay as that makes Minter possibly the best free agent safety available this year. Thus, his asking value (and asking price) may go up considerably. In other news, the team plans to meet with the agents for DE Reggie White and returner Michael Bates soon. If White decides to continue playing, he'll likely have to restructure his contract to do so.

As an update to a previously reported story, Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette DE Reggie White is expected to make a decision on whether he'll play this season or retire before March 2, his agent Jimmy Sexton said on Wednesday. There had been earlier reports he was leaning towards retiring, but Sexton gave no hints on White's plans. OL James Dexter or LB Lee Woodall could join the previously reported FB William Floyd and CB Eric Davis as ex-Panthers later today. League sources said the Panthers are expected to offer restricted free agent WR Donald Hayes a one-year tender of $1.115 million, which would force other teams to give up a first-round draft pick to get Hayes if the Panthers did not match an offer sheet for him.

Team officials already have told his agent, Gus Sunseri, that they plan to re-work the deal which could save the team another $3 million on the cap. The contracts of numerous other players, including CB Doug Evans, are expected to be renegotiated. DE Reggie White will either retire or return to the team with a new salary that lowers his cap hit.

Pat Yasinskas of the Charlotte Observer reports for the Sporting News the Carolina Panthers will be looking to FB William Floyd and OL James Dexter and Bryan Stoltenberg to either restructure their contracts or face being released by the team. The team has three expensive CBs in Doug Evans, Eric Davis and Jimmy Hitchcock and may not be able to keep all three at their current price. The team is expecting to meet with DE Reggie White sometime in the next few weeks to talk about his future. The team will make a tender offer to WR Donald Hayes, but has not said at which level. The Panthers will be looking for QB Dameyune Craig to step it up in training camp to keep his roster spot. QB Matt Lytle has been re-signed and he'll compete with Craig in camp.

QB Steve Beuerlein is pulling for him to remain. Williamson took over when Bill Musgrave quit earlier this year. The Panthers could be parting ways with FB William Floyd and CB Eric Davis due to salary cap restrictions.
