The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins have penciled in newly signed DT Santana Dotson as a starter along the defensive front. However, the team is still expected to pursue free agent DT Sam Adams (Ravens). Dotson said he also had drawn interest from the San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans. "I wanted to go to a veteran-type atmosphere," Dotson said. "I wanted to go to a team with the best chance to be in the playoffs and try to make an immediate impact."

ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli reports the Washington Redskins have agreed to terms with DT Santana Dotson on a one-year deal worth $775,000. Dotson will only count $475,000 against the salary cap because of a new rule giving a cap break to teams signing veterans to minimum-salary deals. The deal includes a $25,000 signing bonus.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports some potential candidates for the Green Bay Packers expansion list are DT Santana Dotson, DE John Thierry, WR Antonio Freeman, RB Dorsey Levens and C Frank Winters. Dotson attended Baylor University in Houston, lives in Houston in the off-season and would be an ideal statesman for the expansion team. Asked if he would be upset if the Packers put him on the list, Dotson said no although he added he was happy being with the Packers. Dotson and Winters could not be on the list together because both have played 10 or more years.

"I will talk to the doctors in the morning and see what they say, see how the swelling is. I will wait and see how I feel in the morning." NT Gilbert Brown (toe) did not practice Thursday, but he should return Friday. S Bhawoh Jue twisted an ankle and sat out the latter part of practice but said he would be fine. DT Santana Dotson sat out Thursday's practice, his second in a row, to get some rest and refresh his legs.

Wayne was not happy after the drills because he said the pain didn't allow him to move at full speed. He is questionable for Sunday and he has not ruled himself out, yet. KR/CB Allen Rossum (knee) could only practice with the special teams units and not the defensive backs as coach Mike Sherman had hoped. NT Gilbert Brown (toe) will not practice until Friday. Coach Mike Sherman said he thought Rossum would return to practice Wednesday, but just in case Sherman had WR Antonio Freeman taking punt returns along with WR Charles Lee during practice. Freeman practiced for the first time since suffering a concussion against Denver August 20 and seemed to function well. Freeman is not quite 100 percent yet. LB Na'il Diggs returned to practice for the first time since aggravating his groin August 27. DT Santana Dotson also practiced and he expects to play in a limited role on Sunday.

The Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers CB Tyrone Williams left practice on Monday when he aggravated a groin injury. Williams felt his groin tighten during one-on-one coverage drills and took himself out of practice. He described the problem as minor and said he would play Friday night in Oakland. Earl Dotson returned as the backup right tackle and participated in the entire two-hour practice two days after he had back spasms and was forced to leave the Miami pre-season game. DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila left practice with an ice pack on his right foot after it was stepped on early in practice. The injury is not thought to be serious. Also sitting out were RB Rondell Mealey (ankle), DE Jamal Reynolds (knee) and defensive DT Santana Dotson (thigh).

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers saved close to $2 million in cap space by restructuring DT Santana Dotson's contract. His salary cap number was pared from $4.3 million to $2.3 million, according to a source familiar with the deal. The team used the savings on RB Ahman Green's new contract and to sign their rookies. He gave up $1 million in base salary in 2001, but he can earn $400,000 of it back if he is among the top four defensive linemen on the team in snaps played. Dotson's 2001 base salary is $500,000, but with the $1.5 million guaranteed money and the $400,000 in incentives he can still earn $2.4 million. His 2002 base salary was trimmed from $4.5 million to $1 million.

DT Santana Dotson has somewhat of a chance of being ready for the team's regular-season opener in September, but DT Steve Warren's rehab is expected to stretch well into the season. When their injuries occurred, Warren's was more severe. Dotson is about a month ahead of schedule on his rehab. WR Anthony Lucas (knee) hopes to be ready for training camp in July.

All three are recovering from knee injuries. OT Scott Curry (knee), DT Santana Dotson (thigh), DE John Thierry (knee and shoulders) and NT Steve Warren (thigh) all did not practice as well. ORT Earl Dotson took part in a limited practice. Wednesday morning's practice was the team's first on the new FieldTurf surface inside the Don Hutson Center. The new contract signed by TE Tyrone Davis was for one-year, $527,000 and included a $50,000 signing bonus. The contract is believed to include some weight clauses that Davis will have to meet.

Pete Dougherty (Press-Gazette) reports in the USA Today the Packers will have a mini-camp next week and once again RB Dorsey Levens will not be there. His right knee that caused him so much trouble last season is still experiencing swelling. Levens was given a physical after he signed a new contract last week and his right knee had some swelling from his off-season workouts. His agent, Hadley Engelhard, expects Levens to be ready to challenge for the starting RB job. DE John Thierry, also won't participate in the mini-camp as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on both knees and his shoulder. DTs Santana Dotson and Steve Warren (quadriceps tendon) and WR Anthony Lucas (knee) are out as well. RT Earl Dotson will take part in some drills, while WR Corey Bradford (knee) will practice full-time.

QB Brett Favre's new contract may be announced this Thursday. As previously reported, CB Tyrone Williams and DT Santana Dotson have been notified they may potentially need to restructure their deals. Agent Leigh Steinberg acknowledged the phone call. The team would like to lower Maryland's cap number of $1.95 million. Steinberg said he did not think the Packers were considering cutting Maryland from the roster before Friday. The Packers are working with CB Tyrone Williams and DT Santana Dotson on restructured contracts as well.

Tom Silverstein reports for the Sporting News the team's salary cap situation won't allow the Packers to pursue any high-priced free agents, but they could sign a couple of free agents when things settle down. At the top of their list is a veteran wide receiver and a capable defensive lineman. The team will only consider big, physical receivers who can get off the line of scrimmage and run across the middle of the field. Defensive linemen who might be affordable are Tracy Scroggins, Regan Upshaw and Christian Peter among others. Injuries to DTs Santana Dotson and Steve Warren have created a hole at the position. The team is also in the market for another cornerback since they lack depth there.
