Jerry DiPaola, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Lee Mays came to training camp as the favorite to win the No. 4 wide receiver job, but veteran WR Chris Doering is making a move to unseat him. Doering is the Steelers' leading wide receiver in the pre-season with 10 catches for 106 yards. He has caught five and four passes for 46 yards in each of the past two pre-season games.

The Washington Times reports the Washington Redskins did not give restricted free agent WR Chris Doering as tender offer and he is now an unrestricted free agent. Doering still could re-sign at the minimum, but he probably wouldn't be a factor as Washington remakes its receiving corps.

According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Washington Redskins coach Steve Spurrier is opening the team's starting WR spots up again. Current starters Rod Gardner and Derrius Thompson will face competition from WRs Kevin Lockett and Chris Doering. "Our starters were not real bad, but they weren't real great the last game," Spurrier said. "They weren't terrible. But we need to do something. They need to run good routes. We're not doing that. We're not doing that at all. We don't have real starters right now." "Lockett has been running very good routes," Spurrier said. "He hustles. He blocks downfield. We've got to play him more."

The Washington Times reports Washington Redskins head coach Steve Spurrier said he sees all of the receivers as being pretty close on the pecking order right now. WR Rod Gardner is currently considered the team's No. 1 receiver. Spurrier said he's not sure if seeing the receivers as close says anything, noting it could mean they have a bunch of good WRs or a bunch of average ones. WRs Jacquez Green, Reidel Anthony and Chris Doering -- all former Florida receivers in college -- stood out during minicamp.

The Rocky Mountain News reports the Denver Broncos tendered offers to restricted free agent QB Brian Griese ($1.488 million) and RT Matt Lepsis ($1.115 million) earlier today. Griese's compensation is now set at a first and third round draft pick, while Lepsis would cost a team a first round pick. The team also tendered its' exclusive-rights free agents. WR Chris Doering, K Steve Lindsey, TE Billy Miller and DB Jason Suttle were tendered at $389,000 while RB KaRon Coleman received a $298,000 tender.
