The Rocky Mountain News reports free agent LB Terry Killens (49ers) had agreed to sign with the Denver Broncos Monday night. Sometime Tuesday he reportedly changed his mind and wanted to go back to San Francisco. However, discussions with the Broncos appeared back on track Tuesday afternoon, and team officials are to talk today with his agent to finalize an agreement. Apparently the Broncos raised their offer to Killens.

RB Garrison Hearst, FB Fred Beasley, C Jeremy Newberry and S Lance Schulters -- all starters -- are all able to depart. QB Rick Mirer, OT Matt Willig, LB Terry Killens, DE Troy Wilson and CB Tyrone Drakeford are also unrestricted free agents. DE Chike Okeafor, FB Terry Jackson and C Ben Lynch are restricted free agents. 49ers.com reports starting MLB Derek Smith suffered a torn MCL in his knee during a collision in Wednesday's practice. It is not immediately known how long Smith will be out, but estimates from team medical personnel are from three-four weeks. Plans to replace him may include, moving Jeff Ulbrich to the MLB spot while rookie Jamie Winborn steps in for Ulbrich. Veteran Terry Killens also is capable of playing all three linebacker positions and he could very well see time at middle linebacker or the plugger spot.

Currently, veteran Terry Killens is the leading canidate to replace him but the team could bring back Jeff Posey, who was recently released by the Eagles.

Dennis Georgatos reports for the San Jose Mercury News San Francisco 49ers LB Julian Peterson limped off the field early in the second quarter of Friday's pre-season game. Peterson was injured trying to tackle Terrell Davis when defensive end Andre Carter rolled up on him, buckling Peterson's left ankle. "It's a high-ankle sprain, and you know how high-ankle sprains can go," coach Steve Mariucci said. "It's going to be a week-to-week thing." Terry Killens and Shane Elam are among the candidates to replace Peterson. Peterson is doubtful for next Sunday's season opener.

According to the Tennessean, the Tennessee Titans have some tough decisions to make today. By the end of the day, the team could be without WRs Yancey Thigpen and Carl Pickens, PK Al Del Greco, RB Rodney Thomas, TE Michael Roan, S Marcus Robertson and LB Terry Killens as the team needs to make some cuts to get under the salary cap. The team is hoping to restructure the contracts of LB Eddie Robinson, WR Chris Sanders and S Blaine Bishop. OL Bruce Matthews and OL Brad Hopkins appear to be candidates for extensions.
