Jeff Legwold, of the Tennessean, reports if Tennessee Titans LS Ken Amato (ankle, hamstring) cannot play, in the Saturday, Jan. 10, AFC Divisional Playoff game against the New England Patriots, then C Tom Ackerman will handle the long snapping. The Titans would likely directional kick more in the punting game with Ackerman in there because he isn't quite as fast in the middle of the field as Amato is.

Jeff Legwold, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans LS Ken Amato (ankle/hamstring) suffered injuries to his ankle and hamstring during the wild-card game against the Baltimore Ravens and is questionable for the playoff game against the New England Patriots. If Amato were unable to play, OL Tom Ackerman would handle the long-snapping duties this week.

Updating previous reports, Terry McCormick, of the Nashville City Paper, reports Tennessee Titans C Justin Hartwig will start the final preseason game on Thursday, Aug. 28, against the Green Bay Packers. Hartwig, who stepped in when starting C Tom Ackerman (knee) needed surgery on his knee, will start his fourth straight game despite Ackerman's return to the lineup. "They haven't really told me much, but they're giving me an opportunity to win this job, and I think if I keep playing well, I have a chance," Hartwig said. Head coach Jeff Fisher said there was still "a chance" Ackerman could win the starting role.

According to Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, Tennessee Titans C Tom Ackerman (knee) is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Ackerman, who had his knee scoped during the off-season to have a bone spur removed, will have the same surgery to repair a "flap tear" he believes happened over the weekend against the Miami Dolphins. Ackerman is expected to miss two weeks, possibly more. "I hope to get some game time in before the regular season starts," Ackerman said. "At the same time, I don't want to jeopardize the rest of the guys going into the regular season." OL Justin Hartwig, who is still learning the center position, will take over as the starter.

J. Michael Moore, of TitansOnline.com, reports Tennessee Titans second-year OG Justin Hartwig may be given practice reps at center this week to add depth behind veteran C Tom Ackerman. Hartwig is excited about the opportunity to play center. "Not only is it making the calls and telling your other linemen what to do, it's the uncertainty of just the little technique things," Hartwig said. "You need lots of time, lots of practice, and lots of reps at it. You have to be able to develop over time. Hopefully if I get a lot of work in training camp I'll be alright come the season."

Jeff Legwold, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans C Tom Ackerman (knee) has been on the field for every workout so far, while other veterans have only had to attend one practice a day during two-a-day practice sessions. This, apparently, is because he's the only experienced center on the roster. "Would one-a-days be great? In a perfect world, yes," Ackerman said. "But I feel fine. I wasn't sure when camp started because I hadn't really tested (the knee) with the pads on. In training camp, you're going to be sore and the knee specifically has been a little bit, but I'll be all right."

According to J. Michael Moore, of TitansOnline.com, Tennessee Titans starting center Tom Ackerman will also be competing for the starting long snapper position against undrafted free agents C John Garrison and FB R.J. Luke. "Tom would be fine, but he's also our starting center so that's the disadvantage," special teams coach Alan Lowry said. "With him having to play every snap in a game, and also snap and cover punts and that kind of stuff is really hard on him. It's a situation I really wouldn't like to have."

Updating ongoing reports, the Tennessean reports offensive lineman Tom Ackerman has been working out at the Tennessee Titans facilities and is doing so with the understanding that a new contract is almost completed. The starting job at center would also be his for the taking. A deal could be reached in the upcoming week.

Updating previous reports, the Tennessean reports the Tennessee Titans and free agent OL Tom Ackerman (Titans) are close to a contract agreement. Ackerman’s agent, Cameron Foster, wants to finalize the numbers Wednesday. “I told him [Titans general manager Floyd Reese] I wanted to get this done quickly before other opportunities pass for Tom, and I think he is aware of that,” Foster said. “I hope we can agree on numbers or we could be looking elsewhere.”

The Tennessean reports the Tennessee Titans made a three-year contract offer to free agent OL Tom Ackerman (Titans). Ackerman's agent, Cameron Foster, said Titans GM Floyd Reese has informed him he wants Ackerman to be the team's starting center in 2003. Foster was scheduled to talk to Ackerman last night and get back to Reese Thursday. Several other teams have expressed an interest in Ackerman, but Foster said he's going to hold off making any other visits until he's had a chance to negotiate further with the Titans.

According to Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com, the Washington Redskins recently talked to the Oakland Raiders about a trade for OL Mo Collins. Some Redskins staffers who worked with Collins at the University of Florida weren't particularly sold on him. The Raiders, always loaded on the line, might be inclined to trade OL Matt Stinchcomb, OL Brad Badger or OL Tom Ackerman, all of whom would start for the Redskins.

As an update to an ongoing storyline, Steve Wiseman reports for the Sun Herald New Orleans Saints OL Tom Ackerman and his agent, Cameron Foster, have proposed a counter offer to the team that would still lower his base salary this year but allow him a chance to be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Saints GM Randy Mueller said the team has yet to make a decision on the latest proposal. Neither side would discuss the proposal, but NFL sources said it would reduce Ackerman's base salary to $500,000 while paying him a $270,000 signing bonus. It would also include incentives that could void the final two years of the contract and allow Ackerman to be an unrestricted free agent next March.

The Advocate reports New Orleans Saints OL Tom Ackerman told coach Jim Hasslet on Tuesday night, what has been speculated to for weeks, he was rejecting a pay cut the team asked him to take last month. Ackerman decided over the weekend that he would not take the cut. The Saints will likely terminate Ackerman's contract, but not until the end of the pre-season in case one of the top six linemen was injured. At a news conference Wednesday, Haslett said, "There is no situation. He is part of this team, period. That's the only situation there is."

As a follow up to an earlier report, Steve Wiseman reports for the Sun Herald the pay cut the New Orleans Saints have requested OL Tom Ackerman to take would take his $1.1 million base salary to $500,000 along with a $100,000 signing bonus. The move would save the Saints $567,000 against this year's salary cap and give them enough room to sign all their draft picks and, if necessary, pursue a veteran kicker. GM Randy Mueller and Saints head coach Jim Haslett made it clear Ackerman can not remain on the roster and earn his $1.1 million salary this season.

ESPN's John Clayton reports the New Orleans Saints have reached agreements with CB Steve Israel and DT Martin Chase to restructure their contracts with the team to save close to $200,000 in additional room under this year's salary cap. OL Chris Naeole also reworked his contract and the team is talking with backup OL Tom Ackerman about also restructuring his contract.
