"He's hung around here a long time. There have been a lot of people brought in here to compete at that spot and he's fought them off," Sundquist said. "He's a battler, a scrapper and a guy who just seems to keep fighting off guys that you think might bump him off the roster. He won't let that happen."

"It was an uphill battle," Carter said. "It took a long time. I just feel like I'm healed up now, and I'm looking forward to some good things." RBs Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson were about dead even as they try to earn the team's starting RB position. Gary gained 35 yards on 10 carries, Anderson had 33 yards on seven tries. QB Brian Griese completed his first five passes and finished 7-of-10 for 91 yards. Backup QB Gus Frerotte finished 11-of-14 for 103 yards and he added a 2-yard TD pass to TE Patrick Hape. Jason Suttle returned an interception 48 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter for Denver's final TD. Dallas rookie QB Quincy Carter, who sparkled in his debut last week, was 6-of-11 for 48 yards.

The Denver Post reports the Denver Broncos visited with free agent TE Patrick Hape (Bucs) yesterday. With TE Byron Chamberlain testing the free agent market and TE Dwayne Carswell having some recent legal problems, the Broncos might need insurance at the position. Now that QB Gus Frerotte has re-signed, his agent Ralph Cindrich can turn his focus to getting his other client QB Brian Griese re-signed as well. Frerotte will be a free agent again after the 2001 season where he can shop again for a starting job. Given his relationship with Texans GM Charley Casserly he's sure to take a look at the expansion Texans.
