Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings FB Joey Goodspeed (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee Saturday afternoon, May 13, and almost certainly won't be available to play this season. Head coach Brad Childress said only that Goodspeed "hurt his knee," but a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the diagnosis.

Judd Zulgad, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings FB Joey Goodspeed (knee) injured his left knee during a pass play in the afternoon session Saturday, May 13. Goodspeed caught the ball but his knee buckled as he ran. He was unable to return, but was able to jog on the sideline.

"It's a very healthy competition," head coach Mike Martz said. "The fullback position is kind of a lost art ... It's just a brutal position. You've got to throw your body in there and just try to slam people. And those two guys, that's what they're about."

Jim Thomas, writing for the Sporting News, reports St. Louis Rams rookie FB Madison Hedgecock could challenge FB Joey Goodspeed for the starting fullback job. Hedgecock is a big guy weighing in at 266 pounds, 20 pounds heavier than Goodspeed. Hedgecock was a very effective blocker in college.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams have been impressed with rookie FB Madison Hedgecock thus far after his performance in a recent minicamp. "He's really a powerful blocker out of the backfield," head coach Mike Martz said. "It's so hard to find guys like him, good lead blockers that can get through traffic and get on guys without getting off-balance. They're unusual guys, and I think we might have one here." Hedgecock will compete with FB Joey Goodspeed for the lone fullback roster spot.

How much he plays will likely regard the health of FB Joey Goodspeed (hamstring), who sat out the Monday, Aug. 23, preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a tight hamstring. "We'll just kind of see what the status of everybody else is," Martz said. "I'd like to have Joey there in front of him."

Goodspeed also will benefit from last year's experience in the Rams offensive system. "He has a complete understanding of what we do," head coach Mike Martz said. "He's a very confident player. The Times Picayune reports the New Orleans Saints have signed several street free agents. Three players who were with the team last season: DE Bobby Setzer, OG Blaine Saipaia and WR Michael Lewis were signed back to the active roster. FBs Joey Goodspeed and Jason Nevadomsky, OL Nick O'Brien, DL Richard Seals and QB Phil Stambaugh were the others signed to undisclosed contracts. According to GM Randy Mueller some of these players will go to NFL Europe.
