The Chicago Bears hired Andy Bischoff as their tight ends coach Friday, Jan. 18. He was on head coach Marc Trestman's staff with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Former NFL DL Michael Sinclair was hired as the team's assistant defensive line coach under Mike Phair.

Miami really wants Coleman, as he could be their top backup at defensive end, but Coleman is seeking a multi-year contract worth more than the veteran minimum salary the Dolphins had planned to offer. The team may wait and try to sign Rob Burnett or Michael Sinclair. "What we're looking for is a role veteran defensive end," said Rick Spielman, the Dolphins vice president of football operations/player personnel.

Updating an earlier story, John Clayton reports for ESPN Friday's release of DE Michael Sinclair only saved the Seattle Seahawks $145,000 on their salary cap, but it did clear up Sinclair's salary cap proration for future years. Sensing he was going to be cut by the Seahawks, Sinclair moved his family to Houston.

The Seattle Times reports the Seattle Seahawks are attending the Senior Bowl practices this week and also preparing their list for the upcoming NFL expansion draft. The Seahawks have 41 eligible players and will most likely expose DE Michael Sinclair and his $3.8 million base 2002 base salary. If he returns to the team next year, he likely would not return as a starter. Sinclair said he thinks he's still a quality player, but not capable of being a 13-plus sack type guy anymore. He will receive $3 million in 2001 as part of the reworked contract, sources said. That figure includes a $1 million roster bonus Friday and $2 million in base salary. The team hopes a revamped defensive line will return Sinclair's performance to what it was in past years, before he struggled in 2000. LB Jamie Sharper visited Seattle on Wednesday. Ravens officials have reportedly told his agent cap issues would make it difficult, if not impossible to re-sign him to a contract.

The Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks DT Cortez Kennedy said Sunday his days with the team are probably over. Salary cap constraints and a subpar season led to speculation that he may be released after the season, even though his contract does not expire until after next season. Kennedy said he wants to sign with a team that has a chance to win a championship in the next year or two, adding that he expects Seattle to eventually reach that goal. As reported earlier, RB Ricky Watters, QB Jon Kitna and DE Michael Sinclair may be gone from the team in the off-season.
