The Chicago Bears hired Andy Bischoff as their tight ends coach Friday, Jan. 18. He was on head coach Marc Trestman's staff with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Former NFL DL Michael Sinclair was hired as the team's assistant defensive line coach under Mike Phair.

The Post Dispatch reports the St. Louis Rams continue to talk with free agent DE Chidi Ahanotu about returning to the team for another season. He recently visited Buffalo, and Denver is reportedly interested, although their signing of DE Michael Sinclair Wednesday may drop them from the battle.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins are not likely to sign DE Marco Coleman, after he is released by the Redskins Monday. Miami really wants Coleman, as he could be their top backup at defensive end, but Coleman is seeking a multi-year contract worth more than the veteran minimum salary the Dolphins had planned to offer. The team may wait and try to sign Rob Burnett or Michael Sinclair. "What we're looking for is a role veteran defensive end," said Rick Spielman, the Dolphins vice president of football operations/player personnel.

Earlier this weekend Rosenhaus said he expected to resume talks with the Jets about re-signing Burton, later next week. As noted earlier, free agent DE Michael Sinclair (Seattle) will be in for a visit later this week.

Skolnick reports for the Miami Herald agent Vann McElroy said the Miami Dolphins have contacted him to setup a visit for free agent DE Michael Sinclair (Seahawks) sometime next week. ''I really respect what Rick Spielman and Dave Wannstedt are trying to do down there,'' McElroy said. ``And they're looking for veteran players who can lead.''

Updating an earlier story, John Clayton reports for ESPN Friday's release of DE Michael Sinclair only saved the Seattle Seahawks $145,000 on their salary cap, but it did clear up Sinclair's salary cap proration for future years. Sensing he was going to be cut by the Seahawks, Sinclair moved his family to Houston.

Clare Farnsworth reports for the Post-Intelligencer that the Seattle Seahawks will release DE Michael Sinclair before March if the Houston Texans don't acquire him in the expansion draft. Sinclair is due a $1 million roster bonus in March.

The Seattle Times reports the Seattle Seahawks are attending the Senior Bowl practices this week and also preparing their list for the upcoming NFL expansion draft. The Seahawks have 41 eligible players and will most likely expose DE Michael Sinclair and his $3.8 million base 2002 base salary. Other Seahawks who may be included on the expansion-draft list include CB Paul Miranda, FS Maurice Kelly and WR Fabien Bownes.

Mike Sando and Craig Hill report for the Tacoma News Tribune that Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Sinclair may sense the end is coming to an end. If he returns to the team next year, he likely would not return as a starter. Sinclair said he thinks he's still a quality player, but not capable of being a 13-plus sack type guy anymore. He said he'd consider retirement if the team doesn't want him back.

CB Ken Lucas (funeral) is expected back Friday. WR James Williams, who started in place of first-round draft choice Koren Robinson against the Chargers, continued to work ahead of the rookie in practice. Coach Mike Holmgren still has not decided who will start, but he said both will play.

Mike Sando reports for the Tacoma News Tribune Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Sinclair has indeed agreed to restructure his contract and he will remain with the team. He will receive $3 million in 2001 as part of the reworked contract, sources said. That figure includes a $1 million roster bonus Friday and $2 million in base salary. The team hopes a revamped defensive line will return Sinclair's performance to what it was in past years, before he struggled in 2000. LB Jamie Sharper visited Seattle on Wednesday. Ravens officials have reportedly told his agent cap issues would make it difficult, if not impossible to re-sign him to a contract.

The Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks DT Cortez Kennedy said Sunday his days with the team are probably over. Salary cap constraints and a subpar season led to speculation that he may be released after the season, even though his contract does not expire until after next season. Kennedy said he wants to sign with a team that has a chance to win a championship in the next year or two, adding that he expects Seattle to eventually reach that goal. As reported earlier, RB Ricky Watters, QB Jon Kitna and DE Michael Sinclair may be gone from the team in the off-season.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports QB Brock Huard (bruised kidney) stated in Seattle so doctors could continue to monitor his healing. Rookie QB Travis Brown will serve as the backup to Jon Kitna this weekend. P Jeff Feagles will be the team's emergency quarterback. C Robbie Tobeck will split time with Chris Gray at center. DE Michael Sinclair didn't practice Wednesday through Friday because of the birth of his fourth child, but he's set to join the team in Atlanta and play this weekend.

DE Michael Sinclair was excused from practice because his wife, Betty, gave birth to their fourth child.

The Seattle Times reports that Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren denies he called the Vikings regarding a potential trade for Brad Johnson. Rather, he says that Vikings VP Jeff Diamond called him to see if the Seahawks had any interest in Johnson. Holmgren said he asked Diamond what Minnesota wanted in return. Diamond said someone like DE Michael Sinclair. "They also want a lot of other stuff," Holmgren said, probably meaning draft choices. Holmgren said yesterday that he is not interested in trading Sinclair. "I'm counting on him to do great things for the Seahawks," he said. "I have no intentions of doing anything with Michael Sinclair." Holmgren continues to remain noncommittal on current QB Jon Kitna being the team's QB of the future.
