According to a radio report Tuesday, Jan. 3, Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan was fired, along with linebackers coach Greg Biekert and secondary coaches Kevin Ross and Rod Woodson. However, head coach Hue Jackson refuted the report on a Sacramento radio show, saying he met with his assistants Tuesday, and only that a decision was coming sooner rather than later, "because that's only fair to the coaches."

Oakland Raiders assistant coach Rod Woodson said one of his first orders of business will be to pick up the phone and call pending free-agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who has credited Woodson for his development since the two were teammates during Asomugha's rookie season in 2003, according to Frank Tadych, of NFL.com. "Hopefully, Nnamdi will come back," Woodson said. "I think we're going to do some different things this year on a defensive side, some more looks, some more things for the corners to make plays, get them to face the football, hopefully, a little bit more so they can get interceptions, so they can be playmakers for this defense. If we can do that, and if we can get a Nnamdi Asomugha back in Oakland, one of the best corners in the National Football League, it makes my job a lot easier."

Chuck Finder, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers CB Deshea Townsend set the team record for sacks by a cornerback during the Week 3 game. Townsend was credited with a full sack during the third quarter of the game, giving him 14.5 sacks in his Steelers career. He broke the record held by former Steelers S Rod Woodson.

Woodson has said he remains hopeful of being ready for the 2004 season. However, because of his unknown status, Woodson's future for 2004 and beyond is in doubt. "We know it is going to be hard for them to come back. So you have to plan as if they are not coming back," Raiders head coach Norv Turner said of Woodson and injured C Barret Robbins (knee). "It is a bonus if they can make it back."

Woodson had not practiced since preseason. His existing knee injury – he had arthroscopic surgery and missed Week 2, but returned in Week 3 – weakened and head coach Bill Callahan said there were "compensation'' issues regarding the leg and lower body.

Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Oakland Raiders FS Rod Woodson (knee) started at free safety Monday, Sept. 22, against the Denver Broncos. Woodson returned to the Raiders less than two weeks after undergoing surgery to remove cartilage and repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Woodson, who was listed as doubtful on the injury report, made the first tackle of the game for the Raiders, stopping Broncos WR Ashley Lelie on a reverse after an 8-yard gain.
