Fri, 27 May 2005 14:22:49 -0700 CBS5.com, citing Bay City News, reports former NFL LB Bill Romanowski was able to settle his litigation involving a practice field punch that ended a former teammate's career, according to his attorney. Jeffrey Springer, Romanowski's lawyer, said Romanowski agreed to settle for $415,000, a lawsuit filed by former Oakland Raiders TE Marcus Williams over an incident at Raiders' facilities in Alameda on Aug. 24, 2003, in which Romanowski punched Williams in the face. Williams had been awarded $340,000 from a verdict back in March, but his lawyer was not happy and he filed a motion asking for more money or a new trial. After a short closed hearing in a judge's chambers Friday, May 27, Romanowski agreed to settle all the issues in the case, including legal costs, for just an additional $75,000, Springer said.
Wed, 23 Mar 2005 11:08:35 -0800 The Associated Press reports former Oakland Raiders TE Marcus Williams won his case against former teammate LB Bill Romanowski as a jury ordered Romanowski to pay Williams $340,000 in damages Tuesday, March 22, for injuring the tight end during a practice drill in 2003. Williams said the attack by Romanowski broke his left eye socket, shortened his memory, gave him double vision and depression, ultimately leading to the end of his brief career.
Tue, 01 Mar 2005 12:59:05 -0800 The Rocky Mountain News reports former Oakland Raiders LB Bill Romanowski was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, March 1, as former teammate Marcus Williams charges Romanowski ended his career during a training camp altercation in 2003. Romanowski ripped off Williams' helmet and punched the second-year tight end in the face during a practice drill. Williams is seeking civil damages of $3.8 million for alleged battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Sat, 29 Jan 2005 10:30:21 -0800 Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports steroid use has become an issue in the $3.8 million lawsuit brought against former NFL LB Bill Romanowski for attacking former teammate Marcus Williams and ending his career. Romanowski, who has been implicated in the BALCO steroids scandal, punched Marcus Williams, then a teammate with the Oakland Raiders, in the left eye Aug. 24, 2003, during a fight on the practice field.
Wed, 21 Jan 2004 15:18:41 -0800 ESPN.com reports former Oakland Raiders TE Marcus Williams, who was the victim of a vicious blow to the face from former teammate LB Bill Romanowski during training camp, is suing his attacker for $3.8 million, according to a court document. Williams suffered a brain injury and a broken bone around his left eye after Romanowski ripped Williams' helmet off and punched him in the face. Williams had to be placed on injured reserve, which meant his season was over before it began. He was later waived by the Raiders.
Fri, 31 Oct 2003 10:53:25 -0800 Updating previous reports, Marcus Thompson II, of the Contra Costa Times, reports an attorney for TE Marcus Williams disputed the Oakland Raiders' claim that his client is healthy enough to play football. Williams was removed from the injured reserve list and released earlier this week. NFL rules state that a player on injured reserve cannot be waived unless he receives an injury settlement or is cleared to play by doctors...neither of which happened. "The medical advice we've received is that Marcus' serious injuries are still healing," Williams' attorney said. "For the Raiders to remove him from injured reserve and cut him under these circumstances is simply wrong. Bill Romanowski's assault has cost Marcus the rare opportunity to capitalize on his successful year last year and has jeopardized Marcus' future in professional football. The fact that the Raiders have now released Marcus with nothing, while keeping Bill Romanowski on injured reserve with salary, only adds insult to injury and compounds the detrimental impact of Bill Romanowski's assault."
