Ken Berger, of New York Newsday, reports New York Jets DT Josh Evans (back) said he is retiring. Due to back surgery that cost him all but one game in 2004, Evans said he is not able to physically do a lot of things he used to do. Evans said he will submit his retirement papers to the league shortly.

Upgrading an earlier report, the Associated Press reports there is a possibility that New York Jets DT Josh Evans (back) will need season-ending back surgery. "At this point, we'll probably know something next week," Jets head coach Herman Edwards said. "I can't say that's absolute. As soon as I find out I'll be ready to tell everybody."

Financial terms of the deal were not released, but the deal is believed it includes a less severe pay cut. Evans will get a portion of a $333,530 roster bonus that was due to him on Wednesday, March 24. The bonus was previously twice delayed.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets head coach Herman Edwards hasn't decided what the team will do with DL Josh Evans, who returned last week from his 8-game NFL suspension. The team could activate him or use their second week of the two-week roster exemption for him. They must make a move with him by next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. "I don't know if that's real wise to rush him back into action," Edwards said. "But we'll see. We're not counting it out. There are a lot of factors that go into getting him ready to play.''

He spent most of his time with the scout team but got a few snaps with the first-team defense. However, he will not accompany the team to Oakland. Evans practiced with the Jets scout team and looked good for someone who had no football contact since the end of organized team activity practices in June. Head coach Herman Edwards was pessimistic that Evans could be available for the Sunday, Nov. 9, against the Oakland Raiders.

Updating previous reports, the Star-Ledger reports if New York Jets DT Josh Evans loses his appeal on his latest positive test for marijuana, the team would recoup the $3 million option bonus it paid him in March to pick up the final three years of the contract. If a lifetime ban is placed on Evans, the Jets will gain $1 million of his prorated bonus on the salary cap this season. Finally, if the Jets decide to release Evans outright, they would get rid of his entire $1.2 million base salary and see a cap savings of $2.2 million.

The New York Times reports New York Jets DL Josh Evans has tested positive for marijuana use, according to three people with knowledge of an NFL administered drug test. Punishment could range from short-term suspension to a lifetime ban due to the fact that Evans has been suspended twice before for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Evans has appealed the results of the test and has adamantly denied any violation. "I did not use or smoke marijuana. I didn't smoke, I didn't use marijuana in no type of way," Evans said in a telephone interview last night.
