NFL | SF/NYG Game Should Have Had One More Play

Mon, 06 Jan 2003 13:40:31 -0800

In a statement released by the NFL on Monday, it has been determined that the New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers game should have had one more, untimed down at the end of the game. The 49ers were flagged for pass-interference while the Giants were flagged for an ineligible receiver down field. Thus, an offsetting penalty should have resulted in the down being replayed at the original line of scrimmage, which was the 49ers’ 23-yard line. On a side note, Giants Matt Allen could not have spiked the ball to stop the clock – that can only be done in hand-to-hand snaps directly from center. Had Allen done so, intentional grounding would have been called and the game would have ended with the 10-second runoff penalty enforced.

That came as welcome news to PK Matt Bryant, who was 11-for-11 on field goals with Allen holding in the first seven games. Also, C Chris Bober is expected to replace LS Bob Jones in FG tries.
