The New Orleans Saints have not yet received official word on a potential suspension for LB Sedrick Hodge. He remains with the team. The Saints are aware of the story about a suspension but they can't comment, deferring to the NFL, which has not commented. Neither the Saints nor Hodge's agent confirmed or denied the report. If Hodge is done for the year, the Saints will badly need LB James Allen to return from a hamstring injury. Allen began the season ahead of Hodge on the depth chart, but he missed most of training camp with a knee injury, and then later suffered the hamstring injury. Hodge was playing fairly well, so this would be a significant blow to a defense that already struggles against the run. Behind Allen, backup LB Terrence Melton doesn't have much experience.

Haslett and Saints defensive coordinator Rick Venturi have concluded that six linebackers deserve playing time with the first unit. Strongside LB Sedrick Hodge, MLB Courtney Watson and weakside LB Colby Bockwoldt, although listed at the top of the team's depth chart at their positions, haven't necessarily distanced themselves from backup LBs James Allen, Ron McKinnon and T.J. Slaughter. "I don't like to platoon anybody, but I think all six linebackers warrant playing time,'' Haslett said. "So, if that's the way it is, that's the way it is.''

"I told them, 'In one or two weeks, we've got to figure out what to do with you guys - cut you, waive you, put you on (injured reserve) or something," Haslett said after practice Monday, Aug. 15. "We're not going like this the whole year. It's just the way it's going to be." He is hoping he will be back on the field in a matter of days. Allen is expected to resume his role as the Saints' starting strongside linebacker this year, but he's not taking that for granted. "There's no good time to get hurt, especially with the way the competition is," Allen said. "Nobody's name is etched in stone."
