Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers S Bhawoh Jue is pushing for a starting job at free safety during training camp. Jue, who has started 11 games during his career, said he wants to have a chance to start at this point in his career. He is battling with veteran S Jerry Wilson for the starting role. Jue said there is still a learning curve because the defense is new. Right now, he is running as the No. 2 at the free safety spot.

Jenna Sampson, of Chargers.com, reports the battle to become the San Diego Chargers' starting free safety is beginning to heat up. FS Jerry Wilson, SS Bhawoh Jue and FS Clinton Hart are all in the mix. "They're all three different types of athletes," head coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "(Bhawoh Jue) is a big strong physical guy, and either Bhawoh or Clinton Hart can play strong safety for you, so we'll just play it out with those three, Jerry Wilson included, Robb Butler, we'll be able to come up with a pretty solid unit."

Jue is the younger of the two and the team thinks Jue might be more instinctive and suited to create the turnovers the secondary lacked last season.

Tom Shanahan, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers FS Jerry Wilson, the 10-year veteran who is the elder statesman of an otherwise young secondary, believes the secondary has a better understanding of roles and responsibilities. In addition to playing a second season in the 3-4, CBs Quentin Jammer (fourth year), Sammy Davis (third) and Drayton Florence (third) and SS Terrence Kiel (third) now have significant NFL playing time under their belts. "I know minicamp is usually about the offensive explosions the fans want to see," Wilson said. "But with all that our offense does and is capable of doing, I think we did a great job for the most part of containing them."

The four were: CBs Donny Brady and Fahkir Brown along with DEs David Bowens and Jeff Posey. There are no guarantees any of the seven will be signed. The Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins first round pick, CB Jamar Fletcher, fills the team's need for a third cornerback behind starters Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain. Drafting Fletcher will likely diminish the already slim chances of free agent CB Jerry Wilson re-signing with Miami. When asked if the selection of Fletcher fills the vacancy, Miami head coach Dave Wannstedt said, "Yeah. He'll have to compete and do everything. He's got ability, he's got intelligence and he's an ex-quarterback."

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun-Sentinel agent Jordan Woy said the Miami Dolphins have not expressed interest in re-signing free agent CB Jerry Wilson. Woy, who also represents Miami free agent S Brock Marion, said two other teams expressed interest over the weekend in Marion to raise the total number of suitors to five. Woy would not name the two new teams. Woy said there was a possibility Marion could re-sign with the Dolphins, but he is aware of the team's cap situation. Agent Steve Zucker said free agent OT Richmond Webb will wait until after the NFL Draft to take visits with interested teams. Webb also could return to the Dolphins. Woy also indicated LB Robert Jones, released by Miami, may visit another team this week for a tryout.

As an update to an earlier story, the Sun-Sentinel reports the contract signed by TE Alonzo Mayes with the Miami Dolphins was his one-year, $512,000 tender offer. The team is waiting to see if free agent WR James McKnight accepts their contract offer and if the Jets don't match their offer sheet to QB Ray Lucas. The Dolphins said the signings of free agent DBs Daryl Porter and Terry Cousin aren't necessarily in anticipation of losing FS Brock Marion and CBs Jerry Wilson and Terrance Shaw.

The Miami Herald reports Dolphins LB and special teams ace Larry Izzo will visit New England on Sunday, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. Following up on last night's story, DE Trace Armstrong reportedly told several teammates he will sign with the Oakland Raiders, but the Dolphins hope to continue negotiations with him. FS Brock Marion has received calls from at least four teams, but agent Jordan Woy has not scheduled any visits. Two other Woy clients, LB Robert Jones and CB Jerry Wilson, have received interest, but no visits have been scheduled. LB Derrick Rodgers has received interest from St. Louis.

The Orlando Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins CB Terrance Shaw (knee) will miss the rest of the regular season after arthroscopic surgery Monday to clean loose bodies in his left knee. Taking Shaws' spot will be Jerry Wilson, who will move from his spot in the dime package to the nickel. Rookie Trent Gamble will assume Wilson's role, and newly acquired safety Kevin Williams will be activated.
