Assuming FS Darren Sharper starts at one safety position, Smith would compete with Offord and SS Tank Williams for the other. Offord said, "Everybody's expectation going into this week was that Tank and I would be competing for the job. I'm pretty sure that's all changed now with bringing in Dwight. I can't be upset. I can't be bitter about the situation. Obviously, I'm coming off an ACL injury. Everything's looking good now, but as coaches, you never know what's going to happen."

Judd Zulgad and Margaret Zack, report Minnesota Vikings S Willie Offord pleaded guilty Tuesday, June 27, in Hennepin County District Court to misdemeanor fourth-degree driving with a blood alcohol of more .08. The judge sentenced Offord to perform 32 hours of community service. Also, Offord paid a $600 fine, said his attorney David Valentini. Valentini said Offord challenged the legality of the stop but the judge rejected it.

Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings S Willie Offord was arrested and charged with drunken driving early Tuesday morning, April 18, according to a spokesman for the Minnesota State Patrol. Offord's blood alcohol content was not available Tuesday, but he was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree drunken driving, which means it was less than .20. He was assigned an April 26 appearance at Hennepin County Ridgedale Court.

He just finished up his first two days of practice at the team's current minicamp. Now, Williams is looking forward to replacing SS Corey Chavous and playing alongside Pro Bowl FS Darren Sharper. Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin said Williams appeared to be "cruising" Friday morning, April 7, but he said Williams has improved since then. Sharper expects S Willie Offord, if he's healthy, to give Williams a run for the starting job.

Vikings head coach Mike Tice and team officials have made no secret of their displeasure with Chavous for staying away, but everyone expects him to be in training camp when it opens in Mankato at the end of July. This week, defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell gave glowing reviews to Offord. "Willie has been doing very well for us. He's had an outstanding developmental camp," Cottrell said. "(He has) a lot of confidence. That's the thing when you have guys with quality depth, it helps."
