San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said last month that he plans to infuse more youth on the roster, but he also added that some veterans are needed. If TE Randy McMichael is to stick around, he is likely to be asked to take a cut in pay. McMichael, who turns 34 in June, is due $1.25 million in base salary with a $250,000 roster bonus.

With several injuries along the offensive line for the San Diego Chargers, the tight ends and running backs might be asked to block more in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears. "They're real active," RB Ryan Mathews said Thursday, Nov. 17. "That's going to be a big part (for) us running backs is helping out our linemen a little bit." TE Randy McMichael was used more in the second half in Week 10 to help out along the line, and that might be the case again in Week 11.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a good idea to expect to rely on Gates this week, once again. The Chargers have the Sunday night game, so your alternatives are extremely limited after that if you bank on playing him. Randy McMichael (hamstring) might be an acceptable very deep alternative; however, although he's expected to play, he's a little gimpy.

McMichael said, "I'll give you the true answer: It's frustrating. Of course you want to go out and make plays, and I want to catch balls. But there's only one ball, and sometimes your number is called to help the offensive line so that [QB] Daunte Culpepper can get the ball off." McMichael is confident his opportunities to catch the ball will increase because offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey called several plays designed for McMichael against the Steelers. "That's one thing about Coach Mularkey as the offensive coordinator that's different from past coordinators. He did call some plays for me. But the defense stopped the plays at the particular time. I can't complain about the play-calling. And when they call the play for me to stay in and block, I have to do that, too."
