Chiefs | Owens Signed |
Thu, 05 Apr 2001 20:30:21 -0700
Len Pasquarelli reports for SportsLine.com, as an update to our earlier story, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent DE Rich Owens (Miami) to a one-year contract. The deal is said to be worth substantially more than the league veteran minimum and probably had to be, given that Owens was pursued by at least three other teams. If Owens has a good year in 2001, he almost certainly will garner some interest next spring from the Houston Texans expansion franchise. Texans GM Charley Casserly was the man responsible for drafting Owens in 1995 with the Redskins.

The candidates are asking for more money than the Dolphins are willing to pay, and Buckley would like to be a starting corner. No change was reported on the DE Rich Owens front. The Dolphins are interested in signing free agent DL Tyoka Jackson (Bucs) and they are trying to reach his agent to gauge his interest in coming to Miami.

Broncos | Team Notes |
Sun, 25 Feb 2001 22:12:17 -0800
Patrick Saunders reports for the Sporting News although the Denver Broncos will remain quiet about their NFL Draft and free agent plans, if they are going to go after free agents it will probably be on defense. Denver's biggest needs come on the defensive line and at cornerback. They could pursue someone like Rich Owens of Miami who won't carry a huge price tag. They need a run-stopping defensive lineman who can also put heat on the QB. The Broncos don't think CB Deltha O'Neal is ready to start, so they may look for another CB as well. Denard Walker of Tennessee is the type of player the Broncos like at cornerback, but he might be too expensive.

There is some talk of him landing with his hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles and reportedly the Arizona Cardinals have an interest as well. Owens has impressed scouts because he has played defensive tackle as well as defensive end.

The Washington Post reports the Redskins have told representatives of RB Ricky Williams they would like to see him workout for them before the upcoming draft. There has been prior talk of a late March, early April workout by Williams for NFL teams but nothing has been finalized yet. The Redskins don't have a RB high on their needs list but if Williams were to slip to No. 5 they may have a difficult time letting him slide by. The team may now make a push to re-sign DE Jamal Duff in the wake of the loss of DE Rich Owens to Miami.
