Retired QB David Garrard (knee) was struggling with deeper passes during New York Jets offseason workouts this offseason because his knee prevented him to drive the ball. Garrard did well on his shorter routes during the workouts. He did miss some workouts earlier this offseason because of the injury.

Sanchez may provide the team's best option at quarterback because QB Geno Smith is considered raw at this point and QB David Garrard is 35 years old and hasn't played an NFL game since 2010. Head coach Rex Ryan is likely coaching for his job this year, so he likely will pick the starting quarterback who will best help him win games in the short term.

The New York Jets were impressed with QB David Garrard (Dolphins) after putting him through a long workout that included testing his stamina, his throwing skill and his surgically repaired knee. Garrard also went through medical tests, including an MRI, and did not leave the team facility until 7:30 p.m. "They gave us all indications they want to do something, but they first have to move some stuff around," said Garrard's agent, Al Irby, alluding to roster/contract tinkering. "David is very interested, but he has some alternatives."

Although Miami Dolphins QBs David Garrard, Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill are competing for the starting job, it is not a guarantee all three quarterbacks will remain on the Week 1 roster. While the likeliest scenario has Tannehill serving in the No. 3 role this year, a league source with knowledge of the Dolphins' front office said the team has considered every contingency at quarterback, and one of them is carrying Tannehill as the No. 2 quarterback if he plays well enough in the preseason and proves that he could handle himself this year if called upon to play. If Tannehill does play well, it could make either Moore or Garrard expendable. Both are vested veterans, meaning their entire 2012 salary becomes guaranteed if they are on the Week 1 roster. Garrard has outperformed Moore thus far in camp.

Garrard, however, took a step forward and definitively looked like the better quarterback. He didn't force anything and made good throws downfield when the opportunity presented itself. Moore, meanwhile, struggled with his accuracy. He missed too many throws he should have completed.

"I'm trying not to put too many grandiose expectations on the kid," Ireland said. "I think (Tannehill) is our future. Obviously, I wouldn't have drafted him with the eighth pick in the draft. I feel like he's the kind of guy you want in the locker room, the kind of athlete you want running an offense.
