Joseph Duarte, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans FS Matt Stevens has started 21 games for the Texans the past two seasons, but that run appears ready to come to an end. Stevens has been the target of criticism the past two seasons for spotty coverage, and the Texans are itching to make changes in the secondary after giving up 421 passing yards to the Titans. Stevens appears to be the most logical target. He was released in the offseason for salary-cap reasons and later re-signed for a friendlier cap number. Meanwhile, the Texans struck out in their courtship for nearly every available free-agent free safety on the market and were forced to hand the starting job back to Stevens.

McCree has been used exclusively on special teams the past two games and starting FS Matt Stevens has been the target of criticism the past two seasons for spotty coverage. Texans head coach Dom Capers said a decision on a starter would not be made until later in the week.

Joseph Duarte, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans FS Travares Tillman was expected to compete for starting job in camp before suffering a forearm injury. When he returns to full workouts in the next 7-to-10 days he could challenge starting FS Matt Stevens at free safety. Stevens missed on several key tackles in the Sunday, Sept. 7 victory over the Miami Dolphins, although his pass breakup late in the fourth quarter was huge.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans FS Matt Stevens (knee) had a vigorous workout Tuesday, Aug. 19, but his status remains day-to-day heading into the Saturday, Aug. 23 pre-season game against the San Diego Chargers. "I don't want to rush anything," said Stevens, whose injured right knee forced him to sit out against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, Aug. 15. "I don't want to sit out a couple of games in the regular season. I'd rather sit out in the pre-season. In the long run, it'd be better to sit back and wait." Stevens plans to take things slow over the next couple of days to see how the knee responds. If he plays Saturday, it will only be for a series or two.

Carlton Thompson, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans sent the results of an MRI exam on Texans FS Matt Stevens' right knee to Birmingham, Ala. specialist Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, August 13. As of Thursday, August 14, the Texans had no knowledge of whether Stevens will need an arthroscopic procedure. Texans head coach Dom Capers said the worst-case scenario would put Stevens out of action for two to three weeks.

Carlton Thompson, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans CB Jason Simmons was not in the mix for playing time at free safety when training camp began, but recent injuries to Texans FSs Matt Stevens (knee) and Travares Tillman (arm) have forced the Texans to reconsider their options. Simmons will get the nod at free safety for the Friday, August 15 pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys.
