The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans rookie SS Glenn Earl is expected to start the Week 10 game at the Indianapolis Colts at strong safety. Although he did not name a starter, Texans head coach Dom Capers is leaning toward Earl getting the nod over incumbent S Eric Brown, who was benched in the second half of the Week 9 31-13 loss to the Denver Broncos. If Earl starts against the Colts, he likely will play only on first and second downs because he has not received much work in the Texans' substitution packages for pass defense.

Brown played special teams in the first half and was used on first- and second-down situations during the final two quarters. Brown said after the game he did not experience any recurring pain or discomfort in the knee.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans SS Eric Brown (knee) has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss the Sunday, Sept. 26, against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Texans head coach Dom Capers. Brown suffered the injury midway through the second quarter of the Sunday, Sept. 19, game against the Detroit Lions on what he called a 'cheap shot' by Lions TE Stephen Alexander. Brown briefly re-entered the game but did not play after the seven-minute mark of the second quarter. Brown could miss more time, although Capers would not speculate.

The Houston Chronicle reports free agent S Eric Brown (Texans) had hoped to have a deal in place with the Houston Texans before he boarded a plane to Pittsburgh Tuesday night, but it never materialized. Agent Gene Burrough believes S Cory Hall's deal with the Falcons set the market for safeties and wants a similar contract for his client. "At this point, the market has been set, and it shouldn't take long to determine what the market is for Eric," Burrough said.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Texans S Eric Brown (shoulder) underwent an MRI Monday and he is deciding whether he will need surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left shoulder. Brown is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and his agent presented the Texans with a contract proposal a few weeks ago. Brown is hopeful he can remain in Houston.

Rookie Ramon Walker will start in Brown's absence, but others will see action as well. Brown has been told he might need surgery, but he does not want to have an operation during the season.

The AP reports the Denver Broncos have not done much to clear up confusion at the safety position. "I can't really tell you the direction we'll go," coach Mike Shanahan said. "We will start off with Kenoy Kennedy and Izell Reese." The team wants to move CB Willie Middlebrooks from cornerback to safety, but Middlebrooks likely won't be able to practice until the June mini-camp because of a leg injury. The team may still re-sign free agent S Eric Brown, but Shanahan said, "We have a lot of depth, and we brought Izell in for that reason."

The NY Daily News reports the contract agreed to with the New York Giants by S Shaun Williams is believed to be a four-year contract worth about $4 million-$5 million per season. It will include a signing bonus, believed to be $6 million or $7 million, that will be paid to Williams in two parts. Neither Jones nor Giants GM Ernie Accorsi would confirm an agreement. However, the Giants have canceled visits by free agent safeties Lance Schulters (Titans) and Eric Brown (Broncos) that were tentatively scheduled for early next week.
