Detroit Lions.com reports the team has upgraded their speed at linebacker this season. Chris Claiborne and Barrett Green are slated to start at middle and weakside linebacker, respectively. Both were starters last season, but Claiborne is entering his first full season as the middle linebacker and Green his first training camp as a starter. "Moving Chris inside fits him to his best position," defensive coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer said. Brian Williams, Jeff Gooch and Clint Kriewaldt are among a group expected to compete for the other starting linebacker job.

If RB James Stewart (ankle) can't play, RB Aveion Cason, who was signed in late November, is expected to get a lot of looks. With rookie QB Mike McMahon (foot) expected to sit again, QB Ty Detmer will get the call with Scott Dreisbach as the No. 2 QB. The injury situation at WR may force the team to sign WR Latef Grim from the practice squad although coach Marty Mornhinweg said he does not anticipate doing so. S Marty Carter may start this week with Lamar Campbell (thigh) doubtful. Also LB Brian Williams will see extensive action with Barrett Green (back) most likely OUT again.

The Sun Herald reports New Orleans Saints TE Cam Cleeland, who hurt his hamstring during Wednesday afternoon's practice, was back at practice on Thursday. Cleeland had his left thigh wrapped but appeared to take all his practice repetitions. He is listed as questionable, but based on Thursday's practice he looks ready to go. Backup LB Brian Williams (hamstring) was upgraded from questionable to probable on Thursday. Backup MLB DeShone Myles (knee) is out.

The Sun Herald reports the New Orleans Saints returned to practice yesterday after their BYE week and only one player missed due to injury. Reserve MLB DeShone Myles is coming off minor surgery on his left knee. He said he hoped to be ready for Sunday's game but when coach Jim Haslett was asked about it, he said simply, "No." WR/PR/KR Michael Lewis practiced full speed. Reserve OLB Brian Williams said his hamstring is ready to go now, too. One "new" player was at practice as TE Cam Cleeland showed up sporting a new hair color, bleached blonde, almost platinum.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints WR/PR Michael Lewis (ankle) returned to practice on Thursday. Lewis said the ankle felt fine and that he had no problems running or cutting. LB Brian Williams (hamstring) sat out the workout, but he is expected to return to practice Monday. LB DeShone Myles (knee surgery) and TE Cam Cleeland also sat out practice. Cleeland didn't practice this week as a precaution as he continues to round into form following his recovery from a ruptured Achilles' tendon in 2000.

Williams is nursing a strained Achilles' tendon and Myles has a knee injury. Myles was downgraded from probable to doubtful for Sunday's game. G Wally Williams (neck) remains probable. Coach Jim Haslett said the results of an MRI showed no major problems for Williams.

DB Steve Israel, who missed almost all of camp with a pulled quadriceps, participated in full-team workouts. LB Brian Williams, who has been bothered by a jammed toe, returned to practice again on Thursday after missing Wednesday. Rookie OT Mitch White, whose left foot had been placed in a boot, returned, as did TE Boo Williams, who had injured a shoulder. DE Willie Whitehead (calf) was held out of practice.

Jeff Duncan, of the Times Picayune, reports for the Sporting News that LB Deshone Myles appears to have emerged as the favorite linebacker for the New Orleans Saints to sign. The Saints, as reported, have been looking at LBs Brian Williams, Lonnie Marts, Mark Maddux and Dante Jones. Myles suffered a pair of knee injuries the last few years.

Jeff Duncan reports for the Times Picayune that the New Orleans Saints were about $30,000 under the salary cap at the end of the week, making it difficult for them to make any major moves in the free agent market down the road. Head coach Jim Haslett said the team would still like to add a linebacker and maybe a kicker. Dante Jones, Mark Maddox, Deshone Myles and James Logan appear to be the top candidates at linebacker right now. Veteran LBs Brian Williams and Bryan Cox have also been considered, but they may not make good special teams players, which is something the team is keeping in mind.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports agent Joel Corry indicated there was interest from around the league for his client, former Packers LB Brian Williams. He added Williams would probably make some visits this week. Although no teams were specifically mentioned, one potential stop could be Seattle where the Seahawks are in need of linebackers and Williams already knows coach Mike Holmgren very well.
