Andrew Dys, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports former NFL CB Derek Ross was sentenced to four years in prison in Texas Tuesday, May 16, according to prosecutors and court records. Ross pleaded guilty to jumping bail after a drug arrest last year, prosecutors said. Ross still faces drug trafficking charges in South Carolina that could get him as much as 30 years in prison if he's convicted. Ross will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Corrections, said Jennifer Green of the Harris County District Clerk Office.

"I don't know if he made it in or not," Haslett said. "He was supposed to come in. I talked to him (Wednesday) and told him what we expected, and we just changed our minds."

Len Pasqueralli, of ESPN.com, reports by claiming CB Derek Ross off waivers, the Atlanta Falcons will assume his contract, which means they will have to pay him only $70,588 for the balance of the year, the prorated share of his $300,000 base salary. He is also under contract for 2004 at a minimum base salary of $380,000. Given the state of the Falcons secondary, which has already been revamped once this season and figures to undergo a wholesale overhaul again in the offseason, it is conceivable that Ross could compete for a starting job next year.

He fumbled twice in Thursday, Nov. 27, game against the Miami Dolphins, missed a practice on Friday, Nov. 28, as well as hospital visits by players on Monday, Dec. 1.

Ross averaged 25.8 yards on four returns, with a long of 33. Whether Parcells plans to keep Ross as the team's kick returner is uncertain.

Updating previous reports, Jennifer Floyd Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys CB Derek Ross (knee) has yet to prove to head coach Bill Parcells that he is mentally ready to play. "He has to be in the frame of mind. Me challenging him is not going to do any good at this point," Parcells said. "He's got to go back in the arena himself, and he's going to have to find that out himself. He's just got to be able to play with confidence. If he can demonstrate that in practice that he can do it, then we'll play him in the game. If he can't, then we'll make him inactive again." Ross is yet to play in a regular-season game this year.
