Bears | Police and Courts: D. Sanders

Wed, 29 Jun 2005 21:52:09 -0700

Updating previous reports, the Associated Press reports Chicago Bears TE Darnell Sanders has asked a judge to return his two dogs to him. The dogs were seized after an 82-year-old man was attacked in April. The judge is expected to rule within two weeks. Sanders was in Chicago April 13 when his dogs escaped from a friend and attacked 82-year old Ernie Assad as he watered his garden in Parma, Ohio. Assad was treated and released from a hospital, but developed a blood clot and died 11 days later. No criminal charges have been filed, but, as previously noted, Assad's heirs have filed a $1 million wrongful-death lawsuit against Sanders and others. Sanders' lawyer said the two dogs did nothing more than knock Assad down, but an animal control officer said Assad was bitten at least seven times.

Bears | Sanders under Investigation

Thu, 28 Apr 2005 07:31:34 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports officials in Ohio are investigating the possibility of bringing criminal charges against Chicago Bears TE Darnell Sanders. His dogs were reportedly involved in the attack and death of an 82-year-old man. Ernie Assad passed away 11 days after Sanders' pit bull and American bulldog, and one other dog, attacked him while he watered plants in his backyard. Natalie Gruttadauria and her brother Dominick Gruttadauria were already charged; Sanders left his dogs with Natalie while he attended the Bears' offseason workout. Under state law, Sanders is required to have $100,000 liability insurance for the pit bull. Police are investigating to determine if he had such insurance and whether or not the dogs were licensed in the municipality in which he lives. The dogs are in the custody of an animal shelter and may be destroyed.
