The Boston Globe reports the battle to start at TE for the New England Patriots is close between Jermaine Wiggins, who has been catching everything in sight and Rod Rutledge, whose goal is to shed his "good block, no catch" image. Rutledge reported in great shape, about 15 pounds lighter than last season, and he does look quicker. Three other candidates for the job, Johnny McWilliams (hamstring) and rookies Jabari Holloway (hamstring) and Arther Love (groin) remain sidelined with injuries. Chris Eitzmann, another candidate, caught the wrath of the coaches for dropping a pass when he was wide-open.

According to the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots have a battle for the starting tight end position ready to kick off at the start of training camp. TEs Jermaine Wiggins, who looked impressive at the end of the 2000 season, will battle with Jabari Holloway, Johnny McWilliams and Rod Rutledge. The team appears to view rookie Arther Love as a project and Chris Eitzmann has an uphill battle in front of him just to make the roster. QBs enjoyed throwing to Holloway during camps this year while McWilliams did little to impress during summer workouts.

Michael Felger reports for the Boston Herald it appears the New England Patriots could be left with a need at TE heading into training camp. The two TEs they drafted, Jabari Holloway and Arther Love, so far are exactly as advertised: good size; good potential; rough around the edges. "We know where they are. How they fit in is the question," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The team has looked at numerous free agents, but most have signed elsewhere. That leaves the two rookie tight ends plus holdover TEs Rod Rutledge, Jermaine Wiggins and Chris Eitzmann on the roster.
