He steps in as an immeditate addition to rotate along the interior defensive front of the Bears. "He's always played stout against the run and that's where everything starts for us," said GM Jerry Angelo. "Everyone knows you can never have enough defensive linemen in this league. To get an experienced guy, one we can roll in for a series and give the other guys a breather, is a big plus. He knows how to play the game."

Of the five, Colts Coach Jim Mora said Peter appeared the most likely not to play, although the status of all for Sunday's game is unknown. "I'd put him as doubtful status," Mora said of Peter. Mora added he was not real confident Wilkins could play this week. Mora said MRIs on Rhodes and Johnson revealed nothing serious on either player's injury and the status of each is day-to-day.

The Indianapolis Star reports Indianapolis Colts LB Mike Peterson (knee), WR/KR Terrence Wilkins (hamstring) and DE Brad Scioli (ankle) all practiced yesterday and may play Sunday. "Are they 100 percent? No," coach Jim Mora said after Wednesday's practice. "Is it for sure they can go? DT Christian Peter (neck stinger) suffered the same injury for the second straight week. LB Mike Peterson (knee), WR Terrence Wilkins (hamstring) and DE Brad Scioli (ankle), all of whom missed Sunday's game, could return Sunday, Mora said. CB Jeff Burris (concussion) should also be able to return Sunday. Burris passed a neuro-psychological test Saturday, but developed symptoms Sunday and Mora said the decision was then made for him not to play.

CB Jeff Burris (concussion) is in the same situation as Morris. OLB Mike Peterson (knee) will work out early in the week to determine his ability to play Sunday. DE Brad Scioli (ankle) and WR Terrence Wilkins (hamstring) will be listed as doubtful for Sunday. The Bergen Record's Tara Sullivan reports as the season opener draws near, the New York Giants are more worried about their injury situation than they are about their talent. "I'm not concerned about the quality of this team. I'm very worried about the physical situation," GM Ernie Accorsi said Sunday. "This is a good football team as long as it stays healthy," Accorsi added. The team is basically the same as last season's Super Bowl team with a few exceptions, LB Brandon Short takes over for Ryan Phillips, DT Cornelius Griffin takes over for Christian Peter, DE Kenny Holmes replaces Cedric Jones, PK Morten Andersen replaces the Brad Daluiso/Jaret Holmes tandem, and P Rodney Williams replaces Brad Maynard. WR Ike Hilliard may be the biggest concern right now along with nagging injuries to WRs Amani Toomer and Joe Jurevicius.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the two-year contract DT Christian Peter signed with the Indianapolis Colts will pay him $2.55 million. It may also head off an ugly situation with the Giants and Browns involving tampering charges. The Giants filed a complaint with the league over the Browns tampering with Peter before he became a free agent that probably won't result in any disciplinary action. What Peter wants is to have the Giants leave the issue alone.

The Indianapolis Star's Mike Chappell reports despite having to fall back to "Plan B," the Indianapolis Colts feel they had a successful Saturday. The team helped its need at safety by drafting S Idrees Bashir in the second round. President Bill Polian ventured outside the draft by agreeing to terms on a two-year contract with veteran DT Christian Peter. The move helps plug a need on the defensive line. S Cory Bird was added later in the draft. Regarding day two of the draft, Polian said, "I think we're still looking for defense if we can find it." Bashir and Bird will be given an opportunity to join returning strong safety Chad Cota in the starting lineup. "It's been a successful day," Polian said.

He probably will visit the Browns this week. The team is hoping RB Curtis Enis can make a difference for them. He weighed in at 243 at his workout with the Browns. The club sees him playing in the 225 to 230 range. Although an offer sheet to free agent RB Corey Dillon (Bengals) has not been ruled out, nothing is imminent either. The Browns first contract offer to free agent TE Rickey Dudley (Raiders) was rejected by his agent. The Giants and the NFL have had no comment on potential tampering charges by the Giants on free agent DT Christian Peter.

As previously reported, the Star Ledger reported the Giants reportedly suspect the Browns might have begun recruiting Peter before free agency began March 2. Agent Ralph Cindrich, who represents Peter, called the story a "bunch of baloney." The Giants are also taking an official "no comment" position on the story. One Giants source did call the story "pretty accurate."

The Star Ledger reports the New York Giants are looking into whether the Cleveland Browns may have tampered in their pursuit of free agent DT Christian Peter. A club official said "there is a chance" the team might file a complaint with the league. Such complaints are few and far between. The Giants have suspicions the Browns might have jumped the gun. Agent Ralph Cindrich, said yesterday that he was unaware of any tampering with Peter. The Giants think one of their defensive players might have been questioned about Peter in February, asked to relay the Browns interest to him and find out whether Peter had any desire to play in Cleveland. Browns coach Butch Davis could not be reached for comment by the newspaper.

The Beacon Journal reports three free agent visitors to Cleveland, RB Priest Holmes, LB James Logan and DT Christian Peter all left town without contract offers. Holmes has other visits planned shortly. Agent Michael Todd said if the Browns decided to look towards Holmes, he and Holmes would be ready to "go in that direction." The Browns were trying to set up a visit with free agent G Frank Middleton (Bucs). G Brendan Stai (Jaguars) who was previously reported as ready to visit Cleveland, said that he had not heard from the Browns in several days.
