The Associated Press reports former NFL CB Willie Middlebrooks pleaded guilty Monday, Feb. 6, in Littleton, Colo., to a misdemeanor assault charge which stems from an alleged fight with a female friend on New Year's Day 2005. Middlebrooks was given an 18-month deferred jail sentence and was ordered to complete nine months of domestic violence classes.

"Obviously," Nolan added, "we've had a need in the secondary for some time. We haven't had a lot of durability, as well as consistency, at the position." The deal went through after the 49ers were satisfied with their background check of Middlebrooks, who is dealing with a domestic violence court case.

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the San Francisco 49ers trade of DE John Engelberger to the Denver Broncos for CB Willie Middlebrooks should be finalized Thursday, July 14. The 49ers held off calling Engelberger until Wednesday, July 13, because they wanted to investigate a domestic assault charge involving Middlebrooks that is scheduled to go to trial October 11. Once they checked into the details of the case, the 49ers decided to go ahead and push to make the trade.

The Broncos have called Engelberger and his agent, Robert Lattinville, to inform him they are trying to finalize the trade. Engelberger joins 16 other defensive linemen in Denver, but he comes to the team with talent. The trade is expected to finalize Thursday, July 14.

They are discussing a deal with the San Francisco 49ers that would send Middlebrooks to the 49ers as early as today for an undisclosed veteran player. The 49ers are investigating Middlebrooks' off-the- field behavior before finalizing a deal. Middlebrooks has an October 11 trial date on misdemeanor domestic violence charges. San Francisco has been shopping DL John Engelberger and DL Andre Carter because the 49ers are switching to a 3-4 defense. An NFL source said the Broncos have been shopping Middlebrooks around the league. Middlebrooks' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he couldn't comment on whether a trade was imminent.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said CB Willie Middlebrooks (leg) is expected to need another month of rehab due to a lower leg injury. He is making good strides in his rehabilitation, Shanahan noted. Team doctors do not believe he will need to undergo surgery to repair the injury.

Middlebrooks was arrested Saturday, Jan. 1, on misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault and harassment and held on county jail. According to a court spokeswoman, Middlebrooks had not posted the $20,000 bond as of Monday.
