Updating an earlier story, the Ap reports Carolina Panthers coach John Fox said after Friday's pre-season game DE Fernando Smith had feeling in both sides of his body. X-rays were negative, but Smith was to have further tests.

They also placed rookie CB Carey Scott on IR.

Sean Jensen reports for the Pioneer Press although nothing is official yet, the Minnesota Vikings roster cuts are expected to be: LB Antonio Wilson, TE Matt Cercone, S Brian Russell, RBs James Wofford and Darius Miles, FB Shaun Paga, LB Rahim Abdullah, OL Mike Malano and Jay Humphrey, DT Tim Engelhardt and WR Kenny Clark. The team is expected to reach an injury settlement with DE Fernando Smith. LB Craig Sauer was released after receiving an injury settlement. WR Cedric James (fourth-round pick) and Carey Scott (sixth-round pick) are expected to be placed on injured reserve.

The Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings CB Robert Tate is still listed as day to day after bruising his right shoulder in the first quarter of last week's pre-season game. DE Fernando Smith rode the stationary bike in practice but as previously reported, he is doubtful for Fridayís pre-season finale.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings LB Craig Sauer is visiting a foot specialist to evaluate his plantar fascia injury that continues to trouble him. He missed practice again on Tuesday. DE Fernando Smith also missed practice because of a separated rib, and it does not appear he will play Friday against Miami.

Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green said in his post-game news conference the team suffered four or five injuries during tonight's pre-season game. Rookie LB Patrick Chukwurah has a concussion. LB Fearon Wright had a sprained wrist, but it is not broken and does not look to be serious. DE Fernando Smith had a bruised rib, or a rib that just pulled a little bit. CB Robert Tate had a sprain in his shoulder. LB Isaac Keys injured his shoulder. It was a dislocated shoulder that popped back in.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press Minnesota Vikings defensive line coach Brian Baker thinks three of the four starting positions on his line are settled. Lance Johnstone and Talance Sawyer have the inside track to start at the ends. DT Chris Hovan, last year's top pick, is expected to start at one of the tackle spots. The other tackle spot will be a battle amongst Fernando Smith, who begins camp as the starter, Willie Howard, the team's second-round pick this season, and Fred Robbins, a second-round pick last season.

As an update to previous reports, DE Lance Johnstone's six-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings will pay him $500,000 per year as base salary in each of the six years of the deal. As reported, the deal can be voided after the first-year of the deal if he participates in just 28% of the defensive snaps this year. In other news, DE Fernando Smith's one-year deal will pay him a base salary of $477,000 in 2001.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green said earlier today the team is done in the free agency market, calling it a "very successful" period for the team. He threw out hints the team will address its needs in the defensive backfield through the NFL Draft. After their most recent signings the team is reportedly about 3 million below the salary cap, enough money to sign their draft picks. The Vikings should also realize another $3.117 million after June 1, when RB Robert Smith is expected to file his retirement papers. The team also announced the official signing of DE Lance Johnstone and the re-signing of DE Fernando Smith.

Bill Williamson of the Pioneer Press reports the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms of a new contract with one of their own free agents, DE Fernando Smith. Terms of the contract were undisclosed, but itís believed Smith will earn a salary around $500,000 plus incentives. Smith is expected to be the starter at left defensive end. Lance Johnstone who agreed to terms last night is expected to start at right defensive end.

The Star Tribune reports today's signing of WR Jake Reed means WR Chris Walsh probably falls to No. 4 WR on the Minnesota Vikings depth chart. The team still wants to re-sign Walsh although talks have not gone smoothly. There is still talk the team could pursue CB Dale Carter, if he is released by the Broncos and reinstated by the league after last year's suspension. The Vikings continue to pursue an upgrade to their defensive line. They have been negotiating to re-sign DE Fernando Smith and as previously reported they visited with free agent DT Chester McGlockton and DEs Lance Johnstone and Keith Washington. Coach Dennis Green said recently he expects to sign two of those four players.

According to Don Banks of CNN/SI, free agent DE Lance Johnstone (Raiders) stopped by for a visit with the Minnesota Vikings earlier today. Johnstone also has reportedly visited Arizona this off-season. The Vikings may be trying to apply some pressure to DE Fernando Smith to re-sign with the team. Smith and the Vikings remain far apart on a contract.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press Mike Sullivan, the agent for Minnesota Vikings free agent WR Chris Walsh, has had conversations with the team but no deal in imminent. Walsh wants to return, but has had casual talks with other teams. Talks with their own free agent DE Fernando Smith are expected to heat up next week. Agent Mitch Frankel representing free agent WR Jake Reed talked to the Vikings again, but a deal is not close. Sources said the Bengals are primed to offer former Vikings OT Todd Steussie a lucrative long-term deal as their top free agent target. As previously reported, there is a chance Steussie may be interested in signing a one-year deal then going back on the open market next year. Both Denver and Tampa Bay seem willing to go with a short-term deal.

Bill Williamson of the Pioneer Press reports, in what has almost become an expected move, the Minnesota Vikings will release OT Todd Steussie next week, barring a dramatic and unexpected change in negotiations according to several sources. There were limited talks this week and no extensive talks are planned. If released, he would become one of the NFL's most coveted free agents. Agent Jeff Durand, who represents DE Fernando Smith, said he sent the Vikings a proposal for a one-year deal Friday. The two sides are expected to try to work toward a long-term deal.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings LB Craig Sauer is continuing his recovery from last season's foot injury. He hopes to be ready for the team's post-draft mini-camp. The team is far apart on a contract with DE Fernando Smith and there has been some talk DL John Randle is lobbying the Seahawks to bring him to Seattle. One name circulating around Vikings headquarters is DL Chester McGlockton, the type of veteran player who might fit under the Vikings tight salary cap as they try to fill their needs on the defensive line.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Minnesota Vikings have re-signed WR Joey Kent to an undisclosed contract. The team is talking with one of their own free agents, DE Fernando Smith. His agent, Jeff Durand, said both sides appear to want to come to an agreement. The Vikings have interest in re-signing TEs John Davis and Johnny McWilliams and DE Bryce Paup. Also, the Vikings are talking to WR Chris Walsh about a contract extension. He is currently an unrestricted free agent. Separately, C Matt Birk is now expected to sign his one-year tender offer as early as today. LB Kailee Wong is not ready to sign the tender offer at this time.

Bill Williamson reports for the Pioneer Press the Minnesota Vikings are mulling over which of their free agents they will attempt to re-sign. OL Corbin Lacina appears to be their top priority. As previously reported, Lacina is sure to draw interest from around the league. Arizona will go after Lacina and sources said he could go there for a visit as soon as Monday. The San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos also are reportedly interested in his services. Among the free agents the Vikings might try to re-sign include WR Chris Walsh, TEs Johnny McWilliams and John Davis and DL Fernando Smith and Bryce Paup.

The Star Tribune reports re-signing DE Fernando Smith is on the Minnesota Vikings' agenda. If John Randle and Tony Williams leave, Smith could have a strong opportunity to start in 2001. Agent Jeff Durand called any talks "preliminary." Durand said another of his clients, DL Jerry Ball, has indicated he wants to make a comeback after one year in retirement. As an update to a previously reported story, the Vikings signed CFL S Carl Kidd. Kidd could be a contender for a starting job next season if free safety Orlando Thomas is not back with the team.

As an update to an ongoing storyline, the Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings DL John Randle and agent Gary Uberstine have refused several offers by the team for him to restructure his contract. Randle's cap figure of more than $8 million makes it nearly impossible for the Vikings to trade him. The team would like to restructure Randle so they can keep him. On the defensive line, it looks like NT Tony Williams probably won't be resigned and DE Fernando Smith will be. Negotiations are ongoing with OLT Todd Steussie and SS Robert Griffith on cap-friendly contract extensions. The team is also looking for LB Ed McDaniel and FS Orlando Thomas to help the team's cap situation with either a restructure or pay cut.
