Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has received permission from former Panthers LB Mark Fields to wear No. 58. "Mark is still considered a Panther, and because of the respect we have for him around here, I wanted to make sure it was OK with him to wear his number," Davis said. "I think that I'll look a lot at what he did for motivation. If he was able to come back and play, there's no reason why I can't go out there and play hard everyday and keep my spot on the field."

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has switched his number from No. 47 to No. 58 to signify his move from safety to linebacker. Davis didn't accept the new number before getting the blessing of the man who wore it last for the Carolina Panthers, LB Mark Fields. "We still consider Mark part of the team around here," said Davis, the Panthers' first-round pick in the 2005 draft. "So I had to go through him and ask him if it was OK for me to wear this jersey." Davis said he got much more comfortable by the end of last season and is excited about being a starter now. He has gotten bigger and stronger, increasing his weight from 227 to 235 pounds. Davis' role will be similar to what Fields use to do for the Panthers, said defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac.

Stan Olson, of the Charlotte Observer, reports former Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields (cancer) is recovering nicely from his latest bout with Hodgkin's disease. "He's doing excellent," said Jim Steiner, Fields' agent. "He just got some good news on some tests, and it seems to be cleared up. He's doing very well." Steiner said he talks to Panthers officials regularly but had not talked with general manager Marty Hurney at the NFL Combine yet.

The Associated Press reports former Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields has hired a lawyer and plans to plead not guilty to charges he drove drunk last month in Arizona, his agent said Thursday, Jan. 19. Fields was cited on seven charges, including extreme drunken driving, speeding, unsafe lane usage and providing police officers with false information. Agent Jim Steiner said Fields will investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest and determine an appropriate course of action.

Celeste Smith and Cleve Wootson, of the Charlotte Observer, report LB Mark Fields, formerly of the Carolina Panthers, faces criminal charges including driving under the influence after being arrested last month in Arizona. Fields was stopped Dec. 29, after a police officer who was part of a group DUI task force spotted him drifting out of his lane and driving 30 in a 25 mph zone, according to police Lt. Joe Ruet of the Gilbert Police Department. After stopping Fields, who police said smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. Fields received seven criminal charges, including three charges related to DUI; speeding; unsafe lane usage; giving false information to police when asked if he had been drinking; and having an open liquor container within a vehicle. He was cited and released, and is scheduled to appear in Scottsdale Municipal Court Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields will soon begin new treatment for a recurrence of Hodgkins' disease. He will start a round of chemotherapy Thursday, July 14, at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and will miss the upcoming NFL season. "My intentions are to come back again," he said. "If you're going to get cancer, this is kind of the one to get."

Short, who is replacing LB Mark Fields (Hodgkin's Disease), says he is excited about the opportunity to start but wishes his chance didn't come at the expense of his friend Fields' health. "The only thing I've been concerned with is Mark's health and his well-being," Short said. "He's been a huge inspiration to this entire team and to me personally. I consider him one of my best friends. So I've been concerned with his health and his family more than anything else."

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields (Hodgkin's disease) has been diagnosed with a reoccurrence of Hodgkin's disease, according to his agent, Jim Steiner, and will not play in 2005. Fields will begin chemotherapy in the near future and hopes to return in 2006. "Mark would like everyone to know that he considers this "blip" in his recovery a minor setback and that his expectations are to return to the field for the 2006 season," Steiner said.

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports free agent LB Mark Fields (Panthers) is expected to inform the Carolina Panthers of his decision regarding his future in the next few days, according to agent Jim Steiner. Fields has been waiting for results of some medical tests before making his decision. Steiner wouldn't say Tuesday, May 3 if the tests have been completed. Fields returned to play the 2004 season after missing 2003 while battling Hodgkin's disease. The Panthers want Fields to return.

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports free agent LB Mark Fields (Hodgkin's disease) wants to wait until he receives a clean bill of health before re-signing with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. According to his agent, Jim Steiner, Fields will wait until May to sign a three-year deal. "Before (Fields) makes a commitment to the club, he wants to take the necessary steps to ensure that he can fulfill the three year term and play at a Pro-Bowl level," Steiner said. "Therefore, by the first week in May, Mark anticipates completing all of his regularly scheduled tests and annual follow-up care related to his previous health condition." Fields missed the entire 2003 season while battling Hodgkin's disease.

Brees earned 18.5 votes from a national panel of writers and broadcasters who cover pro football, beating Carolina linebacker Mark Fields, who finished second with 10 votes.
