Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has received permission from former Panthers LB Mark Fields to wear No. 58. "Mark is still considered a Panther, and because of the respect we have for him around here, I wanted to make sure it was OK with him to wear his number," Davis said. "I think that I'll look a lot at what he did for motivation. If he was able to come back and play, there's no reason why I can't go out there and play hard everyday and keep my spot on the field."

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has switched his number from No. 47 to No. 58 to signify his move from safety to linebacker. Davis didn't accept the new number before getting the blessing of the man who wore it last for the Carolina Panthers, LB Mark Fields. "We still consider Mark part of the team around here," said Davis, the Panthers' first-round pick in the 2005 draft. "So I had to go through him and ask him if it was OK for me to wear this jersey." Davis said he got much more comfortable by the end of last season and is excited about being a starter now. He has gotten bigger and stronger, increasing his weight from 227 to 235 pounds. Davis' role will be similar to what Fields use to do for the Panthers, said defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac.

Stan Olson, of the Charlotte Observer, reports former Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields (cancer) is recovering nicely from his latest bout with Hodgkin's disease. "He's doing excellent," said Jim Steiner, Fields' agent. "He just got some good news on some tests, and it seems to be cleared up. He's doing very well." Steiner said he talks to Panthers officials regularly but had not talked with general manager Marty Hurney at the NFL Combine yet.

The Associated Press reports former Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields has hired a lawyer and plans to plead not guilty to charges he drove drunk last month in Arizona, his agent said Thursday, Jan. 19. Fields was cited on seven charges, including extreme drunken driving, speeding, unsafe lane usage and providing police officers with false information. Agent Jim Steiner said Fields will investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest and determine an appropriate course of action.

Celeste Smith and Cleve Wootson, of the Charlotte Observer, report LB Mark Fields, formerly of the Carolina Panthers, faces criminal charges including driving under the influence after being arrested last month in Arizona. Fields was stopped Dec. 29, after a police officer who was part of a group DUI task force spotted him drifting out of his lane and driving 30 in a 25 mph zone, according to police Lt. Joe Ruet of the Gilbert Police Department. After stopping Fields, who police said smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. Fields received seven criminal charges, including three charges related to DUI; speeding; unsafe lane usage; giving false information to police when asked if he had been drinking; and having an open liquor container within a vehicle. He was cited and released, and is scheduled to appear in Scottsdale Municipal Court Wednesday, Jan. 9.
