Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports that an open competition between Carolina Panthers QBs Rodney Peete, Jake Delhomme, Chris Weinke and Randy Fasani will be settled during training camp, which starts July 26, and the preseason. Fox said the plan at the start of camp is to have all four take an equal amount of snaps. That will change once the quarterbacks start to separate themselves.

"I'm fine with being the fourth-string guy, but I still have a great chance of making the team, I'm pretty confident with my ability," said Fasani. "I think both sides would want to talk after the season," Weinke said Wednesday. "After a long season like this it's only fair to both sides. I'm sure that they're wondering where I'm standing as far as my confidence. And I think it would be fair to say that they would want to sit down and talk to me and explain to me where I stand with them." Recently, Fox said he considers Weinke and QB Randy Fasani their quarterbacks of the future.

In fact, Reed called it by far, the finest single-game pre-season performance by a Panther quarterback in franchise history. He played four series and the Panthers scored four touchdowns. Fasani finished with a quarterback rating of 146.8, completing 6 of 9 passes for 151 yards. He also ran four times for 22 yards.

Bright had 121 yards on four receptions, all of them from rookie QB Randy Fasani. Fasani will earn the league minimum base salaries the first three seasons. If he plays in 55 percent of the team’s plays in any of his first three seasons, Fasani will trigger an escalator clause, which will pay him equal to the NFL’s highest tender offer in 2005.

They will use the money to sign their three remaining unsigned draft picks. GM Marty Hurney said the team is making significant progress in negotiations with first-round draft pick DE Julius Peppers, second-round pick RB DeShaun Foster and fifth-rounder QB Randy Fasani. Hurney also said all three contracts may be finalized by the middle of next week.
