Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills FB/RB Joe Burns is listed as a fullback/ruuning back on the team's official roster. Lately he's seen more work at one of those positions than the other. "Right now I get a little bit more time at tailback," said Burns. Burns does not know why, but he's not complaining. "When you get an opportunity to go in and make a play you've got to make the play no matter where you line up," said Burns. "I've taken advantage of the few opportunities I've had."

Allen Wilson, of the Buffalo News, reports the race to see who will be the Buffalo Bills No. 2 running back is still too close to call. The leading contenders are RBs Joe Burns, Shaud Williams, ReShard Lee and rookie Lionel Gates. "It's pretty close," head coach Mike Mularkey said. "The scrimmage (against the Packers on Aug. 5) was a good indicator, but they'll get a fair amount of playing time when we get into these games. We'll switch them up so they're playing against equal talent. We'll get a better chance to see what they can do as these games unfold." Tonight may be the night one of the four takes a step forward because starting RB Willis McGahee is not expected to see much playing time. The Bills want to give his backups all the time they need to distinguish themselves.

Head coach Mike Mularkey said the ability to pick up blitzes will factor into the team's decision making process when cut-down time arrives. Burns is currently listed No. 2 on the depth chart.

Chris Brown, of Bills Digest, reports Buffalo Bills FB Joe Burns has carved a niche for himself on special teams after making the team as an undrafted rookie in 2002. But he will face heavy competition for a roster spot from seventh-round pick RB Lionel Gates at reserve tailback and on special teams. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie FB Jon Goldsberry represents competition at fullback and special teams too.

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports four Buffalo Bills running backs will be competing for the No. 2 running back slot and maybe two or three roster spots. Rookie RB Lionel Gates and RBs ReShard Lee, Joe Burns and Shaud Williams are in the mix. "We feel good based on what we saw this spring," general manager Tom Donahoe said of his back lineup. "Talking to Mike (Mularkey) and the coaches, we think there's going to be a lot of competition on the team for the second and third spot." "Joe Burns has the most experience of the guys who will be in camp. Shaud Williams did an outstanding job for us last year. We were impressed this spring with ReShard Lee, who we picked up from Dallas, and Lionel Gates, who we drafted in the seventh round. So we have four backs who we think will be very competitive to see who becomes Willis' backup."
