Former NFL DL Chidi Ahanotu said former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was much different as head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Ahanotu said Williams was softer. "He was the softest coach I've been around," Ahanotu said. "It was to the point, really, where I said, 'Man, this guy's really not made out to be a coach.' Honestly, that's what I always felt in Buffalo - this is not football. His approach was very cerebral."

Josh Poltilove, of the Tampa Tribune, reports ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Chidi Ahanotu has a warrant out for his arrest. He is wanted for a charge of aggravated stalking. Ahanotu's attorney, David Stamps, was unavailable for comment.

Rookie DT Anthony Adams will start in place of injured DT Travis Kirske (knee) and DE John Engelberger will start at the right defensive end spot in place of injured DE Andre Carter (back). John Wawrow reports for the Associated Press the Buffalo Bills are negotiating to sign free agent DL Chidi Ahanotu. They are hoping to bolster their young defensive line. "It's not done yet, but it's looking positive," Ahanotu's agent Scott Langley said on Wednesday, updating the progress of contract talks. "I know it's close." Bills coach Gregg Williams didn't have an update on contract talks, but noted that Ahanotu visited the team's training camp facility for a workout Tuesday.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports for the Sporting News the St. Louis Rams are considering playing DT Damione Lewis at left end in some situations next season. Lewis was having a good 2001 season as part of the team's defensive line rotation until he was injured in the Rams Nov. 18 regular-season victory over New England. Lewis needs to spend some time in the weight room this off-season to work on his upper-body strength. With unrestricted free agent DE Chidi Ahanotu not expected to return, Lewis potentially could handle the run-down duties at left end, then slide inside to tackle in passing situations, giving way to Leonard Little at end.

The Post Dispatch reports the St. Louis Rams will look to retain most of their key free agents this off-season. The team has 16 restricted or unrestricted free agents which is about 30 percent of their roster. Only three players in that group are starters: DE Chidi Ahanotu, LB London Fletcher and FB James Hodgins. Several of their free agents are key reserves: DE Leonard Little, WR/PR Az-Zahir Hakim, WR Ricky Proehl and TE Jeff Robinson. The Rams will focus on their own this off-season and not pursue other free agents. "We're in a situation where the key is going to be retaining players," Zygmunt said. "We're going to be dealing with our own (free agents) and that's basically going to be it."

Randy Lange reports for the Bergen Record the New York Jets plan to start training camp with Shaun Ellis playing at the 3-technique tackle spot, similar to the Warren Sapp role in Tampa Bay. He could still move to defensive end later. Jason Ferguson is at nose tackle while John Abraham can move from right end to left, while the other end spot will be a battle among Rick Lyle, Shane Burton, and Eric Ogbogu. Bengals.com reports the Cincinnati Bengals have scheduled a physical Friday for former Tampa Bay DE Chidi Ahanotu. The team also spent Wednesday negotiating with the agent for free agent DT Bernard Whittington, who worked out for the team Tuesday.
